Kingdom Fungi

Home Fungi are organisms that digest food by releasing enzymes into the environment to break down matter. The fungi then absorbs the matter. A lot of the time fungi will digest dead material, although it may not wait for the material to die (making it a parasite). Fungi reproduce by releasing spores into the environment from a fruit like body called a mushroom. Since this is often the only visible part of the organism the fungi's phyla are classified by their reproductive organs.

Phylum Basidiomycota: Basidiomycota are the organisms that probably come to mind first when a person says mushroom. It includes deadly, edible, and hallucenogenic fungi. There are about 250,000 species. They are sometimes called club fungi because the spores tend to grow on club-like structures.

Phylum Ascomycota: Ascomycota fungi froduce spores in structures calls asci. Asci are pod or sac-like structures. 25,000 species of fungi are a member of this phylum. Some of the fungi in this group help make bread and beer.

Phylum Deuteromycota: This phylum is basically made up of the fungi that don't fit into the other phyla. There are around 25,000 species in this phylum, including athelete's foot and penicillin.

Biodiversity

Amanita Muscaria
Habitat: Commonly found under pine trees.
Food: The organic material around pine trees.
More info: By crushing the cap and mixing it with milk you can make a deadly fly bait. The mushroom is poisonous, and tends to grow in autumn. It can grow up to 80mm high and 50mm wide. It's color is often light to fire engine red with white spores.
