Ryan Sonderegger in Blue at Cadet Nationals

September 15, 2002

Two SME wrestlers qualify for the Kansas national team.

It was a busy off season for several SME wrestlers. Taylor Gravely, Mark Robinson, Bryce Cope, Ryan Sonderegger, Matt Miller and Kevin Ecker competed in kids and/or freestyle wrestling. Kevin Ecker and Ryan Sonderegger qualified through the Kansas State Tournament for the Junior and Cadet National tournaments held in Fargo, ND in late July. Competing for the Kansas National Teams required a week-long intensive camp in Hutchinson, competing against the best wrestlers in our state.

At 152 lbs wrestling in Greco-Roman action Ryan Sonderegger opened the first session with two close and improbable wins beating cadet champs from Michigan and North Carolina. Against North Carolina in overtime he held a clinch for 52 seconds before dodging a head and arm attempt to nail down the win. Sonderegger was less fortunate in the third and fourth rounds, bowing out of the prestigious Greco-Roman tournament with a 2-2 record. Not bad. In the freestyle tournament, Sonderegger dropped a 2-8 decision to the California Champ and then was schooled by a Missouri opponent which ended his National competition.

Kevin Ecker competed at 145 lbs., in freestyle in the National Junior Tournament. He opened against a kid from his home state, New York. Ecker never got going in the match and lost 2-13. Facing elimination, he stormed back against Oregon with a 13-6 win in which he used a number of well-executed double legs and high crotches. In the third round, Ecker drew the Florida Champ and it was a tussle, leads changed hands four times before the Florida kid pulled away with a 15-10 win. It was a great experience for these Lancers. Previously, only High School All-American Joe Johnston represented SME at Nationals.
