Two Lancers Place in Top Three at Kansas State Tournament.

For the first time in 32 years, two Lancers finished in the top three at the Kansas State high school wrestling tournament. Senior Ryan Sonderegger won the 171 pound 6A class and claimed his second straight title. He was joined by his teammate and best friend, Logan Rutherford, who surprised all but those who know him by claiming third at the 215 6A class. Rutherford narrowly missed making the finals.

Marshall Martens (135) senior and John Carr (152) sophomore also competed in the tournament. Martens was one match away from having the opportunity to earn a place at state. The senior finished his career by winning the Regional and becoming just the 20th Lancer in history to win a Sunflower League title. Young John Carr finished his first varsity season in impressive fashion. Carr had a winning record and qualified for state after finishing second in his Region and second the week before at Sunflower League.

For Sonderegger this year’s State tournament was noticeably different from his title quest last season. The margin of his victories was significantly greater. Sonderegger pinned his first opponent from Blue Valley Northwest and then won in the quarterfinals by tech fall, 22-5, over a Garden City opponent who eventually placed 6th. In the semi’s Sonderegger beat a familiar opponent from Saint Thomas Aquinas, by a score of 5-3. Sonderegger was in control the entire time. It was the fifth career meeting between these opponents with all wins going to SME. In the finals Sonderegger scored six takedowns against CJ Gibson from Wichita East and cruised to a 12-6 win to claim the 171 pound title. “I’m proud of myself. Winning one championship is great, but winning two is amazing,” said a happy and thankful Sonderegger after his title bout.

It was Rutherford’s first State tournament. Rutherford began wrestling only as a sophomore at SME. His junior season ended in mid-December with an elbow injury. Rutherford was not able to start his 2005 season until January and entered the Sunflower League at just 3-0. He won League. The following week he won a Regional title. Remarkably, Rutherford entered the State tournament with less than 40 high school matches under his belt. The KWCA association had seen enough though and ranked Rutherford third in the final season rankings going into the State Tournament. At State, he beat his first round opponent from Wichita North by tech fall and then dominated a quality Saint Thomas Aquinas opponent with 6 takedowns earning a 12-5 win. In the semi’s, Rutherford scored a first period takedown and with a few seconds left the Wichita Northwest opponent escaped to cut the lead to 2-1. In the second, Rutherford cut his opponent lose giving him a point in favor of working on his feet for a takedown. The second period was punctuated by Rutherford’s hard shots and his opponent’s solid defense and the period ended with the score tied 2-2. Rutherford chose to wrestle the third on his feet and continued to pound inside for takedowns and narrowly missed on several attempts. Although a stall warning was called on Wichita Northwest, regulation ended 2-2. In the one minute overtime, Rutherford was again the aggressor. Finally with 8 seconds left and Rutherford going for broke and in deep on a single leg at the edge of the mat, Wichita Northwest countered and scored a takedown to win the match. Rutherford came back strong the next day to beat a very talented wrestler from Manhattan 8-5 and then downed Leavenworth 8-4 to claim third place. It was the third meeting between Rutherford and his Leavenworth opponent in three weeks. Rutherford finished his season 12-1, leaving his coach and those who had the privilege of watching him wrestle wonder how great he might have been if he had wrestled all four years. “Logan is smart and very physical athlete. He’s everything a coach could want in a wrestler,” said Coach Sonderegger. “I don’t think many people realize how difficult it is to do what he just did.”

Notes: Ryan Sonderegger is only the third state champ in Lancer history and all three SME champions are two time winners. Bob Barber won in 1973 and 1974. Joe Johnston won in 2000 and 2001. Barber wrestled for the University of Missouri and Johnston is currently starting at 157 for University of Iowa. Sonderegger’s record this season was 44-2. His career record is 135 wins and 27 losses. Sonderegger is second in career wins to Johnston who had 142 wins.

Three Lancers Win League Titles.

Marshall Martens celebrates Sunflower League Championship Win at 135 pounds.

The Sunflower League started in the 1967-1968 season with 5 teams. This year there were 12 teams at the League tournament. S.M. East placed 7th with a score of 94 1/2 points.

For the first time in the 37 years of the Sunflower League's existance, Shawnee Mission East has three league champions. Marshall Martens (135) beat Jonathan Dokos from Olathe East 4-2 for his title. In winning the title Marshall avenged a loss to Dokos at the Johnson County Classic in December. On his way to the finals, Marshall beat Lucas Ortiz from Leavenworth and first seeded Tom Theis from Olathe Northwest.

The second league champion was Ryan Sonderegger (171). Because of his excellent record this year, Ryan earned the first seed in the tournament and demonstrated why that was deserved with his falls over Michael Bryant of Olathe North and Kyle Weinmaster of Lawrence Free State on his way to the finals. In the finals Ryan faced Jacob Metzger from Olathe East. Metzger is rated 6th in class 6A at 171. Ryan won the match handily with a score of 16-8.

The Third league shampion was a surprize to the tournament participants. Logan Rutheford surprized everyone except a few loyal SM East fans and coaches by defeating first seeded Carl Wilk in the finals. On his way to the finals, Logan knocked off Shane Bauer from Olathe East 15-3 and pinned Da Rel Broady from S.M. Northwest. Logan was a surprize since he just rejoined the team a couple of weeks ago after recovering from a football injury. Unfortunately, Logan was sidelined much of last year due to injuries.

An additional very pleasant surprise was the second place finish by John Carr at 152. John lost in the finals to first seed Kyle Regin from Olathe South. In reaching the finals, John beat Adrian Carmichael from S.M. Northwest 8-5 and second seeded Cameron Reschke from Lawrence Free State 8-3.

The other Lancer placer at the league meet was Angelo Santos at 130. Angelo placed sixth having to default the 5th/6th place match due to a leg injury. Hope he heals before the Regional Meet next week.

Congratulations to the Lancers for their showing and to the individuals who placed.

Next up for the Lancers is the Regional Meet next Saturday at S.M. West at 9:00AM. The top four placers in each weight class move forward to the State TOurnament the following week in Wichita. The teams at the regional are Lawrence, Lawrence Free State, Leavenworth, Topeka High, S.M. West, S.M. North, S.M. Northwest, and S.M. East. Wishing East well at the regional.

Lancers Win 55-18 over S.M. North.

Shawnee Mission North celebrated its senior night on 2/9. Unfortunately, the S.M. East Lancers spoiled the occassion by blasting the Indians 55-18 in the dual meet. Pins were recorded by Marshall Martens (135), Chris Uhl (140), Andrew Faeber (145), John Carr(152), Ryan SOnderegger (171), T.J. McMannis (189) and Logan Rutherford (215). Joey Lutz (119) scored a major decision winning 15-2. Welcome back Joey. The Santos brothers also both won.

Up next for the Lancers is the Sunflower League on Saturday 2/12/05 at S.M. South.

Lancers Cap Senior Night with 49-18 win over rival SMS.

In a great setting for high school wrestling, fans packed the SME gym to watch Olathe North and SMS challenge SME on Senior Night. Olathe North had opened the evening with a win over SMS.

The crowd was fed and ready for the main events of the evening. The lights dimmed, the mat lamps switch on and the music cranked “Welcome to the Jungle” and from the far corner of the gym the proud Lancers from SME roared across the gym to circle the mat and claim the night theirs.

Metro Sports had a camera crew to cover the spectacle. Administrators and parents commented afterwards that they didn’t realize how exciting wrestling could be. The varsity competed on the South end of the gym and the junior varsity competed simultaneously at the North end.

Senior night is an SME tradition of recognizing and honoring senior wrestlers and their parents for the contributions and sacrifices they’ve made to the Lancer program. “Senior night is a big deal for us,” said Coach John Sonderegger. “We know how hard the journey is for these guys coming in without experience as freshman, paying their dues and persevering through to the end; and, parents play a key role in keeping their kids out.” The honorees were Marshall Martens (135), Chris Uhl (140), Will O’Rouke (152), Ryan Sonderegger (171), Logan Rutherford (215) and Liz Johnston, team manager.

The Lancers fell behind early in the first dual against Olathe North with forfeits at 119 and 130, but Marshall Martens fired-up his team with a cradle for a fall. After receiving points for a forfeit at 145, John Carr (152) emerged from a close match to put a half nelson and far wrist on his opponent and squeezed him hard for a third period fall. The next Lancer to win, also by a fall, was Ryan Sonderegger and SME had pulled the score to 24-37 with three bouts remaining. After losing at 189 by fall the dual was lost, but SME had more still to cheer about when Logan Rutherford stormed out and pinned his opponent in less than 30 seconds. Final score, 30-46 but a dual against rival SMS still remained.

After introductions, it was all business for SME. After an exchange of forfeits in the lower weights the Lancers took command of the dual. Winning their bouts were Marshall Martens, Chris Uhl (who wrestled valiantly on senior night despite being violently ill earlier in the day), Cole Johnson (160), Ryan Sonderegger and Logan Rutherford. Rutherford bumped up to heavyweight. Final score Lancers 49-SMS 18. “There were a lot of our guys who came to wrestle tough and I could point out any number of them, but it was Chris Uhl’s win despite being sick earlier that day that best represented the grit of our team,” said Coach Sonderegger.

It was a night when wrestling took center stage at SME. A night that was enjoyed by all and a time the Lancer seniors will not soon forget.

Lancers Place 5th at North.

Fielding a team of only 9 wrestlers, the Shawnee Mission East Lancer team took 5th place at the ten team North Invitational today scoring a total of 77 1/2 points only 16 points behind fourth place Saint Joseph Central. Team results would have undoubtedly been better if key wrestlers Joey Lutz, Angelo Santos and Zack Lehr had been there to participate. Lutz Santos and Lehr are recovering from injuries.

Even without those key players, the team had an excellent day with virtually all wrestlers contributing points to the team effort. Carlo Santos (103), Marshall Martens (135), John Carr (152) and Drew Robinson (215) who placed third and Peter Fields (125) who was fourth recorded the best results for the day. This was the best overall performance of the year by the team.

Congratulations also to Coach Ufford for his leadership of the team at the tournament. Parents and other fans commented favorably on Coach Ufford’s organization and overall effort.

In an unprecedented move on Saturday, Coach Sonderegger entered 6A State Champion Ryan Sonderegger in the prestigious Baldwin Invitation Tournament. At that tournament, Ryan’s 171 weight class featured 5 top ranked wrestlers from Kansas and an excellent wrestler from Missouri. The bracket served as a major test for Ryan and was an excellent prep for the upcoming League and State tournaments. Ryan was challenged but rose to the occasion and took third in the event. This was an innovative approach in preparing all the wrestlers on the team for the upcoming challenge of the League, Regional and State Tournaments.

Next up for East is the rescheduled Senior Night on Tuesday February 1st at East Gym. The triple dual against Shawnee Mission South and Olathe North begins at 5:30 P.M. and will feature both Varsity and Junior Varsity matches.

Lancers place 12th at Kewpie Invitational in Columbia.

The Lancers placed 12th in the Kewpie Invitational tournament in Columbia Missouri with a total of 56 points. The tournament was a two day event concluding on Sunday and was held at Columbia Hickman High School.

Next up for the Lancers is the Shawnee Mission North Tournament next Saturday. Also remember the re-scheduled Senior Night at SM East on February 1.

Sonderegger takes Third at Bobcat Classic.

At one of the toughest tournaments of the season in the state of Kansas, the Bobcat Classic hosted by Basehor-Linwood High School, SME Senior Ryan Sonderegger (171) took third place with a 4-3 win over Leif Goleman from Desoto. The 171 bracket included the number 1 ranked wrestlers in class 4A, 5A and 6A. Soneregger, undefeated coming into the tournament, was only seeded third behind first seed Blake Mallory (undefeated and ranked 1 in 5A) from Shawnee Heights and second seed Justin Wiscombe (undefeated and ranked 1 at 4A) from Santa Fe Trail.

Ryan wrestled well throughout the day losing in the championship bracket in the Semi-finals to eventual champion Justin Wiscombe by a score of 3-1. To get to the Semi-finals, Ryan beat Leif Goleman 9-7 in overtime. Ryan had previously faced and defeated Goleman in the semi-finals of the Johnson County Classic.

In the consolidation bracket, Ryan beat Bobby Spexarth , 5th ranked in 4A, from Andale by a score of 2-1. This lead to a rematch with Goleman for 3rd place. Ryan beat Goleman again by a score of 4-3.

Unfortunately, no other Lancer placed in the tournament and as a result, the Lancers finished in 23 place out of 27 with a total team score of 37 points.

Up next for the Lancers is another major tournament the Kewpie Invitational in Columbia, Missouri next weekend.

Double Dual at East Rescheduled.

Announcing that SME’s home double dual meet that was cancelled due to inclement weather has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 1 at 5:30pm. The meet is “Senior Night”. The event features three duals between SME, Olathe North and Shawnee Mission South. It is a JV and Varsity event.

Practice Cancelled/ Meet Cancelled.

The double dual scheduled for today will not be held.

The District has cancelled all practices for today, Jan 5. If we have school tomorrow, Thursday, we’ll practice at the regular times. Varsity 6-8pm, JV 3-5:15 (roughly). If we do not have school tomorrow we will probably be allowed to practice and if so that’s going to happen at noon. Guys, you have to get a hard workout in today. Run stairs or a treadmill if possible and get a hard lift in. We only will only have 2 practices before SMS Invitational on Saturday.

Lancers Claim First Johnson County Classic Title in Four Years.

Ryan Sonderegger (171) pinned his first three opponents in the Johnson County Classic all in the first period. He then put on a “takedown clinic” in his semi-final and finals matches, taking each opponent down six times. The combined record of his final two opponents was 25-1 going into their matches with Sonderegger. Sonderegger is 15-0 heading into the Christmas Break. “He’s where he should be this time of year,” said Coach Sonderegger. “Ryno’s improving each week. He’s on pace to be prepared for challenges that will come in January and February,” Coach Sonderegger said.

The Lancers placed only one other wrestler in The Classic and improbably it was freshman and first year wrestler, Joey Lutz. “Joey fought, scrapped and scrambled his way to 6th place,” said Coach Sonderegger. “Not many first year wrestlers place at The Classic but Joey got the job done.” The Lancers had expected to place at least four wrestlers in The Classic but Martens (135), Lehr (145) and Atkinson (215) were upset.

Lancers Take Two Weights at Cougar Invitational

Ryan Sonderegger (171) and Don Atkinson (215) won individual Championships at the 2nd Annual Cougar Invitational hosted by Shawnee Mission Northwest high school. Atkinson pinned all four of his opponents. Sonderegger defeated his Platte County foe with three takedowns in the final period to come back from a 2-4 deficit. Marshall Martens (125) also made the finals but claimed a silver medal. Zach Lehr (145) made it back to the consolation finals but could not compete for third place because he had wrestle his maximum 5 matches prior to that bout. The team finished in 8th place out of 12 teams. Platte County (MO) easily won the tournament followed by Royal Valley and Olathe East.

“We’ll see Platte County again in early January at the SMS Invitational,” said Coach Sonderegger. “If we want to win individual championships, it seems like they’re the guys to beat.”

The Lancers are in finals week and preparing for the Johnson County Classic which starts at 3pm on Friday, Dec 17 and continues through Saturday. JCC will be held at Blue Valley High School and features every school of every classification located in the Johnson County.

Lancers Host East Kansas Duals and finish 6th

The 2004 5A Kansas returning state champions, Turner, claimed the team championship at the East Kansas Duals on Saturday, Dec.4 at SME. The Lancers faced Turner in the opening round of dual competition and were beaten, 70-9. Ryan Sonderegger and Drew Robinson were the only winners for the Lancers in round one. Robinson pinned his opponent from Turner with a surprise move from bottom and turned in the first of his 4 wins on the day. Sonderegger won all 5 matches and improved as the day progressed.

Ten of the 14 Lancers competed for the first time on varsity. Five had never even wrestled a match before the day. “I knew we were going to take our lumps,” said Coach Sonderegger. “But, every one of our wrestlers one at least one match during the day and I thought we wrestled to our ability in most cases.”

The Lancers won two dual meets and dropped three and finished the tournament in 6th place. See "Results" page for dual results. Sonderegger Wins State Title for Lancers.

Junior Ryan Sonderegger (160) became only the third wrestler in Lancer history to claim a state wrestling title on Saturday, February 28th at Kansas Coliseum in Wichita. Bob Barber won state titles for SME in 1973 and 74 and Joe Johnston won in 2000 and 2001. Sonderegger finished the season with a record of 41-2 and now has 89 wins in his high school career. Also competing in the State Tournament were Junior Marshall Martens (125), Freshmen Bill Hansett (135) and Zach Lehr (140) and Senior Mark Robinson (215). Robinson claimed 5th place by beating Josh Carr of Garden City in overtime.

Robinson finished the season at 38-7 and in addition to placing at State, he was a Sunflower League Champion. Robinson’s 25 falls is fourth best in a single season in Lancer history and his 198 team points is fifth best for a single season. Unfortunately for Mark, in his second match, he lost to Josh Carr from Garden City, a wrestler who Mark had pinned at the Basehor-Linwood tournament. Mark got some measure of revenge when he beat Carr in the fifth place match. Overall, Mark was 4-2 at the State Meet.

Sonderegger’s four wins at state were hard fought. In the quarter-finals he pulled a groin and received five stitches above his right eye but held on to win 8-6. He competed with tape and a pad around his head the semi-finals and finals. In his semi-final bout, Sonderegger stormed back from a 4-0 deficit to pin eventual third place winner, Ryan Johnson of Manahttan. “I knew that if I stayed after it, the points would come”, Sonderegger said. “I believed that if I continued wrestling hard a window would open and the points would come and they did.”

The championship bout was a rematch against Olathe South’s Conor Fitzgerald. Sonderegger had beaten Fitzgerald 5-2 in the semi-finals of the Johnson County Classic in December. Neither wrestler could score in the first period and both wrestlers looked cautious. In the second period, Sonderegger chose down and scored a reversal on a standing switch that seemed to catch his opponent by surprise. He cut Fitzgerald loose and fended off a few shots to close out the second period. In the third period Sonderegger cut Fitzgerald to tie the score at 2. Neither wrestler could work inside of one another for a shot. Neither would risk a shot from away. Regulation time ended with the match even 2-2 and both wrestlers were warned for stalling. The first overtime ended with the score still 2-2. Since Sonderegger scored the first offensive points of the match it was his choice in the thirty second tie-breaker. Sonderegger chose down. He quickly stood to his feet and shrugged off a desperate attempt by Fitzgerald to hold onto his upper body. After a jubilant run around the mat, Sonderegger leapt into his Coach/fathers arms. “I didn’t use all my weapons out there because I knew after the second period that if I played it smart, I would get the down position in the tie breaker and that I couldn’t be held down. That’s exactly what happened and now I’ve got the State Title,” said Sonderegger.
