De Norville The Conqueror The Norton Family History is said to be of Norman origin, with the Norman name of Norville, a "place-name" meaning "North Village." Ancient records or family documents have spelling varients for this surname which include Norville, Nortown, Nortone, Nortun, and Norton. The family is believed to have been descended from Seigneur de Norville, a french Invader, constable born in 1040 in Seine-Maritime, France, and a knight at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066. He married deValois between 1050-1085 in France. Le Sr. de Norville came into England, September, 1066, from France, he married into the family of Valois, his son. No. 2 "a," Sr. de Norville married into family of Barr. It is supposed that all of the Norton families descended from this one man. Below is a photo of the famed Bayeaux Tapestry held by the Museum of Bayeaux, France, which depicts the Norman Conquest of England. The Normans of Southern Italy were sons of Tancrede de Hauteville, a baron from the Normandy area of France. This name crosses that of the Norville line.

The Bayeaux tapestry was commissioned by William the Onqueror's wife, the dutchess Matilda for her uncle Odo, bishop of Baueaux.
She did not actually do the work on this tapestry which was made in England or France.

Norton motto: Dieu et mon espee "My God and my sword."
