Grinstead - The Derby was an important race right from the first day, May 17, 1875, not simply because it was a commercial success, but because it began a renewed interest in Thoroughbred racing. It led ultimately to the proliferation of other stakes races which, in turn, helped increase the value and need for Thoroughbred breeding farms, for which Kentucky is now renowned. Here are a few Kentucky Derby Facts: The fastest start in the Derby was run by Top Avenger, who zoomed out to a :21 4/5opening quarter en route to a 19th-place finish in 1981. Top Avenger and Groovy (16th in 1986) ran the quickest opening half-miles (:45 1/5) while Spend a Buck, winner of the 1985 Derby, posted times of 1:09 3/5 and 1:34 4/5 for three- quarters and one mile. Secretariat set the track record of 1:59 2/5 for 1 1/4 miles in winning the 1973 Derby. The slowest Derby was the 2:52 1/4 run by Kingman in 1891, when the race was run at 1 1/2 miles.
"M" is for the million things she gave me, "O" means only that she's growing old, "T" is for the tears she shed to save me, "H" is for her heart of purest gold; "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining, "R" means right, and right she'll always be, Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," A word that means the world to me.
