The Elan Valley Water Pipe

The Elan Valley Water pipeline passes through Cookley on its way from Rhayader (map) in Wales to the water taps of the people in Birmingham via the water works at Frankley (map). For most of its journey through Cookley it is invisible because it is under the ground. The pipeline used to pass over the canal but in 1988 the pipe was put under the canal.

The famous Hay Bridge can just be seen in the top right hand corner of this photograph

The pipe passes under Castle Road and under the Lionfields estate. Over the last few years there has been some spectacular leaks to this pipe resulting in waterspouts hundreds of feet in height.

The pipeline was built over a period of 12 years, completed in 1904, costing some £6 million. The pipe is 74 miles long starting at the dams in the Elan valley and finishing at the reservoir at Frankley.
