The
Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal
In 1770 an act was passed for
making the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal from the River Severn to the River Trent.
It was to be 46 miles long and link, via the rivers, the 3 great ports of Bristol,
Liverpool and Hull. It was the first canal to become navigable. The Cookley Tunnel, built
by James Brindley (c.1770) for the canal
traffic, is 65 yards long and is the oldest example of his work. It passes under Bridge
Road in Cookley Village.
