A Seatrouts Year

A Seatrouts Year

There are two different sorts of seatrouts in saltwater:
  • The one interested in feeding
  • The one interested in spawning

The first group is divided in two groups again:
  • The mature big trout
  • The small ones also called greenlanders (grønlændere in danish) The most interesting for us who want to catch seatrouts are of course the trouts feeding and specially the big ones. That's the reason to know a couple of things about the way they move around through the seasons.

    Winter

Seatrout fishing during the winter have got it's own magic
    Winter landscape

During the winter are almost all of the big seatrouts in the rivers to spawn, but there is allways some of them staying back in the saltwater. These are called springers. They are the most interesting catch at this time of the year but not the only one because groups of greenlanders swim around and are also very active during the winter. Sometimes is much more fun catching some of this greenlanders during one day than trying to get one of the real big ones the hole day without luck. Anyway, they move sometimes together... Some good tips in the wintertime: slow retrieve, a trout in salt water when temperature is very near freezing point doesn't move very fast! On the other side, there is very little food in the water at that time, so you have the best chances to get a strike if your bait get seen and if you are doing it slowly. Another good tip is fishing near the places where a river runs out to the saltwater. In Denmark you have to respect a distance of 500 meters coastline from the river, where angling is not aloud. Another good spot during the winter is the fjords like Randers, Mariager, Horsens, Vejle and so on. That's because normally thre is some sort of river delivering fresh water to the salty water out there and that is important for seatrouts during the winter. Best methods: flyfishing, and if you are spinning some sorts of bait wich you can be able to retrieve very slowly.
