...the second meeting

I had just gotten in to work when I saw the red Porsche pull into the parking lot.

“Oh, goodie.” I thought. I was being both sarcastic and giddy. I wanted to see him again, but not here. If he didn’t know I worked at his country club, then I didn’t want him to find out.

“Colleen, you’ve got tables one through five today.” My manager, Chris, told me.

“Okay. Annie here?” I asked, speaking of my friend who, if I had a problem, always helped me out.

“Yeah, but she’s leaving in five minutes, right when your shift starts.”

“Oh.” I looked over at my tables to inspect who was sitting at them. Right there, at table three, sat him and a gorgeous blonde. She had on this tight blue top and a skirt that didn’t cover her butt one bit. And I was to be their waitress. I looked over for Annie. But, after searching the kitchen, I couldn’t find her.

“Where’s Annie?” I asked Jeff, one of the cooks.

“Oh, she left just about the time you got here.”

“Oh great. That means I’m going to have to wait his table.” So, I put on a smile and headed for his table.

“Hi, I’ll be your waitress today. My name is Colleen. What can I get for you?” I asked.

“Finally.” The blonde chick said. I pretended not to notice the comment and I looked over at him.

“Okay, I’ll have a diet and the number five chicken.” He said with a wink.

“And for you?” I asked her.

“Just water with a lemon. And make sure it’s not the kind with seeds. And with one of those little umbrella’s.” she said. I saw him stare at her. I wished he was staring at me. I smiled.

“I’ll be right back.” I went back into the kitchen and put their orders in as a prompt. And thankful that there was no one else at my tables, I stared at him through the little window from the kitchen. He seemed to keep staring at her as she sat there with her attitude.

“Order up!” I heard and went to fetch my order. I brought the drinks out first.

“What took you so long?” she asked me.

“I’m sorry about that. We only have one guy back there.” I lied.

“And look! There’s seeds in my lemon.”

“I’m sorry, but lemon’s don’t come without seeds.”

“Well then, take them out!” I put on a fake smile and grabbed the glass.

“I’ll be right back.”

“Ashley, you don’t have to be such a be-w-itch.” I heard him say after I left. I brought the water back out de-seeded.

“Your chicken will be right out.” And I left to go fetch the chicken. I saw him kindly yell at her a few more times before I came back out with his food.

“Here you are.” I said, setting the plate down in front of him.

“Thanks.” I saw ‘Ashley’ give him a look. I stopped by once to ask if they needed anything and was shoed away by the princess. And I never thought what happened as I handed him the check would happen.

“Aren’t you just going to put that on your tab?” Ashley asked him.

“I don’t have a tab.” She rolled her eyes at him. He seemed to be fighting back the urge to slap her and looked up at me.

“Would you like to go out with me tomorrow?” he asked. My eyes widened.

“Excuse me?” Ashley asked. “You just asked another girl out that you don’t even know in front of me?”

“I do know her.”

“No you don’t.”

“Yes, I do. It’s Colleen. And she goes to East Furio.” I smiled, happy that he remembered our conversation the other day. I took a piece of paper and a pen and wrote down my number for him.

“Here. Call me and we can talk about this. But don’t call after eight.”

“Okay. Talk to you later then.” He put down $20 and I started digging for his change when he stopped me.

“No, keep the change.” He said.

“But your bill was $10.50.”

“I know. Later.” And he left. I put the twenty in my pocket and happily strode into the kitchen. I continued my job for the rest of my shift, anxiously waiting to get home to get the phone call.
