will the phone ring?

I sulked into work that next day. He hadn’t called and I was very disappointed. But I should have figured that guys don’t usually call you right away. But he had asked me to go out with him tonight and if he called tonight that would be a little short notice. I sighed as I looked over the tables I’d be waitressing. They were filled. But thankfully, only one hadn’t been served yet. It was a boy with blonde hair and he was alone. I grabbed my pad and headed to his table.

“Hi, I’m Colleen and I’ll be serving you this afternoon.” I said in a monotone voice. He smiled up to me. He was cute but looked younger than me.

“Can I take your drink order? Or are you ready to order.”

“Umm, I’ll have a coke.”

“Okay. I’ll be right back with it.” I walked in the kitchen and found Annie.

“Hey. You’re here too.” I said.

“Yeah. Why you so bummed?” she asked while I filled up the coke.

“I’ll tell you in a minute.” I left the kitchen and brought the boy his drink.

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. Are you ready to order?”

“Uh, not yet.”

“Okay. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

“Thanks.”

I waited for Annie to come back into the kitchen so I could tell her about yesterday. She came up behind me.

“So, what’s the scoop?” she asked.

“Well, I was really hoping you’d be here yesterday to help me out.” And I continued to tell her the story about how witch-y the guys date was and how he asked me out right in front of her and I gave him my number.

“And he didn’t call.”

“Bummer. And he asked you out for tonight?”

“Yeah.”

“Sounds like he was just trying to make that girl jealous.”

“Thanks a lot.”

“Well, I just don’t want you to get your hopes up if he isn’t really interested in you.” I half smiled.

“Thanks.” I went back out to the boy’s table.

“So, ready?” I asked. He smiled sheepishly.

“Not yet.” I raised my eyebrows.

“Want me to give you a few minutes?”

“Um, why don’t you just sit down while I decide.” I looked around at my other tables. I had no one else to wait on so, I sat.

“Okay. Sounds good.” He looked at me.

“Why do you look so bummed?” he asked.

“Oh…nothing. Just, this guy that I met yesterday here asked me out in front of this other girl who he was with and I gave him my number so we could talk about going out tonight and he never called.”

“Are you sure he wasn’t just doing that to get rid of that other girl? That’s what my brother does.”

“Why does everyone say that?” I asked. Both him and Annie suggested it. Maybe it was true. I should just forget about him. He shrugged. I checked my watch.

“Are you going to order anything?” He avoided the question.

“How old do you think I am?” he asked.

“I don’t know, 15?” He smiled.

“No, fourteen. But you were close. I’d guess you were about eighteen, nineteen.”

“Nope. Try sixteen.”

“Sixteen? Really? That’s not too far off from me.” I smiled coyly.

“What are you saying?”

“Would you date a fourteen year old?”

“I don’t know. Maybe. If he was mature enough.” He smiled.

“Can I call you?”

“Sure. But are you actually going to call?” I asked with a smile.

“Yes. So, in that case, I’ll have the hamburger a la carte.”

“Okay. Let me go put that in.” Then I stopped and turned back to him.

“What’s your name?”

“Zac.”

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

I walked into the kitchen with a smile.
