The Game Master

“ When I left you I was but a learner. Now I am the Master!” – Darth Vader, ANH

The Game Master is the person controlling the game. They have written and directed the story. Thrown in the special effects and provided the sets. All you as the player need to do. Is acting your part in costume. The Game master controls all NPC characters unless he directs the task to Assistant GMs. In any given game the GM can have up to two Assistants. This is up to the discretion of the GM but two assistants is the maximum.

The GM works hard to devise a game that will be both fun and challenging at the same time. Games, like the movies, must flow well and keep a good pace. If things are planned poorly the game will get bogged down and the fun level will drop. This generally tends to happen when players play out of character or do things that adversely affect the script, like playing god. Hopefully the new rules and the new ways for the GM to handle things will avert most of this.

The important thing to remember is this. The GM is in charge of the game. They decide how many and what types of enemies you will encounter. They decide what the goal of the story is and they lead you to that goal. The GM remains neutral in and does not “pick” on any one character in the story unless it is part of the story. The GM may also play a character in the game. This may help players to determine what actions the GM wants the group to take. However, it may also mislead them. It’s all part of the fun.

ONLY THE GM may use the RED ARIEL BOLD 12 POINT font and only to communicate to the other players in the chat room about what they need to do or what they see in regards to their environment. Please try and steer clear of any fonts or colors that would promote confusion between what you are typing and what the GM is typing. Also keep Instant Messages to the GM to a minimum during the game. This will help the GM concentrate on the game at hand.

One final note. If the GM says that you can not do something. Live with it. It’s for a reason. While this document is the core of the new rules. An “AOL Rogue Squadron Game Master’s Guide” will be fourth coming.
