Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest Sorority established by Black college women, was founded in 1908 at Howard University. Nine young women, inspired by the visionary leadership of Ethel Hedgeman, formed a sisterhood that has grown to over 900 chapters in the United States and the Carribean. Desiring to ensure that the Alpha Kappa Alpha legacy endured through the years, Nellie Quander was instrumental in incorporating the sorority in 1913, establishing the national organization.

Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters are grouped into ten regions. Epsilon Rho Chapter, chartered at Purdue University, is in the Central Region, which encompasses Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kentucky and St. Louis, Missouri.
