Monster Bash 2000!
(cont.)
For me and my wife, the
major highlight of the Bash occurred Saturday night at midnight,
when a rare 1925 print of Lon Chaney, Sr.'s, The
Phantom of the Opera was screened along
with the extraordinary keyboard accompaniment of Kevin Slick. Mr.
Slick, a musician of
great talent and sensitivity, has composed an entire musical
score for this version of Chaney's
Phantom which adds a
whole new dimension to the viewing of this classic film. His
wonderful
music enhanced our experience immeasurably, and I felt like I was
seeing the movie for the
first time. The print of the film is itself remarkable because it
contains many scenes that were
cut out of the 1929 re-released version which is the one usually
viewed today.
But Kevin Slick was not
the only Bash artist on view at midnight, for he himself was a
walking
work of art created by Bash make-up artist Ron Chamberlain, who
had transformed Mr. Slick's
face into a remarkable recreation of Chaney's disfigured Erik!
And the very next day, Mr.
Chamberlain metamorphosed himself into the contorted figure of
Chaney, Sr.'s, Quasimodo, much
to the joy of my wife, for whom the 1923 version of The
Hunchback of Notre Dame remains
unsurpassed.
