Born: May 29, 1922 in Norfolk, Virginia
Weatherly was killed in the race at Riverside, California on January 19, 1964.
Little Joe, as he was know, already was a champion motorcycle racer when he turned to cars and entered a Modified race in 1950 in his hometown of Norfolk, VA. Three years later, he as champion of the NASCAR Division.
He moved to NASCAR Grand National (Winston Cup) and was the most popular driver in 1961, the year he won the now Hanes 500 at Martinsville Speedway.
He went on to record 24 victories and back to back championships in 1962 and 1963. That 1963 season saw him run 53 of the scheduled 55 races, winning three of them and finishing in the top five 20 times.
