DECADES of RACING Top 10 Drivers / First Wins / Birthdays / Busch Origin / BookStore / Hall of Fame FIRST NASCAR MEETING The first meeting of the National Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing was held on December 12,1947 at the Streamline Inn Motel in Daytona Beach, Florida. The organization named Bill France Sr. as its first president. William Henry Getty France, aka, Big Bill France, gathered together a group of racing promoters, drivers, and mechanics with the dream of establishing an organization to set a standard set of rules and regulations to help promote stock car racing. Incorporated on February 21, 1948, the organization hired Erwin "Cannonball" Baker to be the first Commissioner of Racing. Charlotte Speedway was the site for the first Nascar Grand National race held on June 19, 1949. This was for strictly stock cars only. The 200 lap race on the three-quarter mile dirt track had a first place purse of $2,000.00 and was won by Jim Roper driving a 1949 Lincoln followed in second by Fonty Flock in a 1949 Hudson and third went to Red Byron in a 1949 Oldsmobile 88.
