THE WINSTON MILLION

The Winston Million sponsored by R.J. Reynolds ran from 1985 to 1997 and rewarded any driver with a bonus of $1,000,000. if he or she won any three of the following races in a single season. The Daytona 500, The Winston 500(Talladega), The World 600 (Charlotte) or The Southern 500 (Darlington).

In 1985 Bill Elliott won "the big money" by winning The Daytona 500, Winston 500 and The Southern 500. He finished the season with 11 wins, 16 top 5's and 18 top 10's and earned over $2,400,000.

In 1997 Jeff Gordon won at Daytona, Charlotte and Darlington joing Elliott as the only two drivers to take home the million dollar bonus. Entering the 1998 season Gordon had started 156 races with 74 top 5's, 95 top 10's, 16 poles and 29 wins including the inagural Brickyard 400. (I have that die-cast) His career earnings exceed the $16,700,000. mark.
