Ęsop's Fables

"The Wolves and the Dogs"

Once upon a time, some dogs were watching over their master's flocks when they were approached by a pack of wolves. As the wolves approached the dogs began barking.

"Please stop," interrupted the wolves in a polite manner. "We come to you with a fine proposal. We have come to the conclusion," continued one wolf, "That there is not that much difference between you and ourselves. The main difference between our breeds is that we rule ourselves, and man rules you. While we attack man's flocks you dutifully defend them as man commands you. And for your obedience what is it that he gives you in return we ask? For your blind obedience man collars you, beats you, and only gives you dry bones to eat. So in your defense we beg you to not put up with this ill treatment any longer. We say join our pack today, let us take man's flocks and we shall share the best of the young lambs with you."

The dogs were persuaded by the promises of the wolves and followed them back to their den. However, once they entered the mouth of the den the wolves set in on them and tore the dogs to pieces, killing them, and leaving their flocks unguarded and defenseless.
