Last day before Performance
We had a good after school rehearsal at the band room practice room today--everyone except for David Woo was able to make it. (don't feel bad, David, you've come to all the other practices). We worked on playing together, dynamics, and balance. It sounds good...well, decent! We'll do fine. Also Mahalo-grams for Mrs. Murata, Mr. Graser, Mr. Bridges, Sarah Tochiki, and Aaron Tamura-Sato, were passed around and signed.
Correction: Dale is IN! He is alive and well and will be performing with us tomorrow!
However, Jeri (Trumpet 2) has dropped out.
OUR FINAL LIST IS: CARYN (conductor), AARON, MIYASAKI, NAOMI, BRANDON, MAX, HERMAN, MATT, CISCO, DALE, GLENN, RILEY, and WOO. This is also our seating arrangement (for now), (from conductor&audience's view) front row L-R , back row L-R. We'll have to figure out the mike thing right before the show, which will be difficult but it can't be helped.
COME TO DILLINGHAM ASAP AFTER YOUR 9:30 CLASS. The AP absence thing is being handled by the deans.

A pretty good practice today after school--pretty good turnout. Caryn, Glenn, Cisco, Max, Brandon, David Woo, David Miyasaki, and Naomi. We now only have 1 more practice day until the performance--and we still haven't had a full band rehearsal!! We can only play our best. The main thing is to have fun--right?
Upadate: Dale will be unable to play for the performance (get well soon!), and Chris has soccer so he won't be performing with us either.

Sort of a practice after school at the band room--only Max, David H, Matt, Miyasaki, and I came. I heard that Chris came too but he left. Glenn stayed for a little while. We played the piece through about once, for Sarah, but after we just quit. Practice tomorrow--3:30-4:30. Key club people (Max, Brandon, Naomi, Aaron-but he has track) will be coming around 4. We better make it good!

The Ala Moana Beach PotluckBeach&Dinner, Planned by Max! It was a lot of fun--Food, Beach, and BG's. Pictures to come.

Second Day of Spring Break Practice at Montague. Everyone that came yesterday, plus Matt and David Woo came today. We first worked on "Star Wars"--like yesterday, the dynamics and balance, and also the length of the notes in the beginning (short, but not staccato, accented notes). With Caryn conducting, we actually sounded pretty good. We worked on this for a little then breaked (broke?) for lunch. Aaron had fun with the camera.
After lunch everyone tried other people's instruments. After all, it's nice to be able to know what other people have to go through and why certain parts may be more difficult for them, or why it's hard to blow loud without squeaking.
After that we momentarily returned to our original instruments and parts. We even tried playing "The Lion King," with Glenn exuberantly conducting. Then we went back to trying out, and perfecting, our bandmates' instruments.
After a long, hard day of practicing, we finally had to leave. Aaron, our up-and-coming cameraman, caught some footage of David Woo and Max fighting it out in front of Montague. It just goes to show how well we cooperate and get along.

Today was our first day of Spring Break Band Ensemble practice! It was at Montague--everyone except for Matt, David, David, Chris, Dale, Jeri, Cisco, and Riley came. However with the people who did come, we got it down pretty well. Caryn conducted. We worked on dynamics, instrument volume balancing, the forte-piano at the end, and horn cues. Of the four hours, we spent about an hour eating lunch, two hours playing other material, and less than an hour actually playing the piece. Oh well. It actually sort of sounds good, but we can always aim for better!

Friday before Spring Break! After school, we went down to the Junior School band room practice room, so we could actually breathe and not have any distractions. We had a good turn out--Caryn, Glenn, Riley, David Woo, David Herman, Chris, Matt, Brandon, Max, Aaron, David Miyasaki, and I came. Copied sheet music was passed out and we played through the piece a couple of times. With everyone there and playing (or worse, not playing), it was pretty hectic. We left with a lot of stuff to work on. Caryn has taken over as conductor, as Glenn's tuba part is needed.

Patrick (trombone) and Brent (clarinet) dropped out. Still no percs.
After assembly there was a short meeting for all the Talent Show people, in which we confirmed our interest, and were told and asked about details. They've got the chairs covered, but we need to get music stands. We also need to find a place to warm up and tune right before our performance. We were also informed that our performance cannot be any longer than five minutes. This was a bit of a problem with the nine minute long "Lion King." We all decided that we should change the music for multiple reasons, so that's what we did in our after school practice.
After school--A few people went down to the Junior School Band Room to ask director Mrs. Murata about/for music, while everyone else stayed up at the Academy looking through the music again. Up at the Academy "Esprit Concert March" was chosen and they went through a sight reading with Glenn conducting. Meanwhile, at the Junior School, we found out from Mrs. Murata that she had pop music ranging from "Titanic" to "The Little Mermaid." Since "Titanic" is kind of slow, and "The Little Mermaid" needs percussion, Max asked if she had "Star Wars," and, she did! We picked this piece and took it up to the Academy. We did two or three run-throughs on it with Mr. Bridges. It's a bass piece, so we really needed Glenn on tuba. However, this left us without a conductor.

TODAY WAS OUR FIRST BAND ENSEMBLE PRACTICE!!! Wooooo-hooo!! There was a pretty good turnout--we "played" the beginning of "The Lion King," with Glenn conducting. It worked out pretty well. However we didn't get past the beginning of the second page (of four!).
