Sadistic terrorist Castor Troy (Nicholas Cage), responsible for many ruthless murders, bombings, and the death of Sean Archer's five year-old son Michael, has been hunted by an FBI covert anti-terrorist unit headed by Sean Archer. This sociopath is as bad as Sean Archer is good.

Castor and Pollux charter a private jet out of Los Angeles, nearly escaping. Archer's covert unit arrives at the airport runway just in time to foil their escape, preventing the plane from taking off and running into a hanger. In the ensuing fight in the hangar, Sean Archer knocks Castor into a coma. He would be kept on life support at the Walsh Institute, where his face would be removed and switched with Archer's.

While Archer is in prison with Castor's face and identity, the real Castor almost miraculously emerges from his coma. He forces the medical staff at the Walsh Institute to give him the only face available--Sean Archer's. To make matters worse for Sean, Castor torches all the evidence of the operations--including the medical staff and special operation agents Tito and Hollis.

The real Castor Troy visits Sean Archer in prison and tells him of what he has done and what he is about to do. This makes Sean confused at first, but it would drive him to escape from the prison and, eventually, face Castor Troy again.
