If the makers of What a Girl
Wants were really being honest about their intentions, they would title it
Everything a 13-Year-Old Girl Wants to See in a Movie. Excellent news for
Bynes's youthful fans, who may never have a better chance to bask in her perky
presence. It's not so great for the rest of us, since the film has nothing
else to offer. Though predictable and often preposterous, this warm and funny
wish-fulfilling fantasy is a richly rewarding ride. Because Amanda Bynes and
Colin Firth portray the rambunctious daughter and stuffy father so engagingly
that it almost redeemed the whole movie, but almost certain - 13 year olds
will cheer. Parents will pray for The End. There's nothing wrong with this
movie, it just kind of moves along at this little pace, no surprises. Six
months from now, it's possible this may be a hot video rental for the slumber
party crowd. But if you no longer need your parents to escort you to the
movies, you're probably too old to care much about 'What a Girl Wants. What a
Girl Wants is a movie that has actors with more charisma than its lackluster
script deserves. What a Girl Wants isn't what everyone else wants, unless
they're a preteen looking for something sweet, predictable and forgettable.
