In the role of Wong Fei Hong that made
him famous in Once Upon a Time in China, Jet Li, plays the same character here,
but with a totally different cast and director. With the director being Wong
Jing - The King of Mo-Lei-tau (nonsense) and combining with an all-star comedy
cast of Dicky Cheung, Cheung Bak Chan, Cheung Man and old-school martial artists
- Gordon Liu and Leung Ka Yan - what you get is a bizarre version of Once Upon a
Time in China. Although through the first 20 minutes, it was almost just like
Tsui Hark's magic, bizarre comedy is quickly connected as soon as Dicky Cheung
come in. Surprising, Last Hero in China turns out to be a pretty good Wong Jing
movie and a good easy-going Jet Li's movie. With expert action direction by the
master Yuen Woo Ping (Matrix), the last fight and the fight between Li and
Gordon Liu was well filmed. On one note, Li is also doing drunken style near the
end, which is also fascinating to watch when comparing to Jackie Chan's Classic
Drunken Master 1 and 2. Also look out for plenty of cameos performances - Anita
Yuen, Yuen King Tan, etc. As a result, Last Hero in China, works well as both a
action/comedy or a parody, but no where near the magic of Tsui Hark's Once Upon
a Time in China. If you want to see Jet Li dress up as a chicken, like Wong Jing
and Dicky Cheung's wackiness or Yuen Woo Ping action direction, then get ready
for Last Hero in China, for a fun-easygoing movie ride.
