As much as I enjoy and like
watching Stephen Chow's movies, the God of Cookery to me was just another
formulaic Chow's movie, but this one has one of the most bizarre ending and
almost ruining the whole movie. The beginning and the middle part is actually
terrific, and also had a very good potential plot and the idea of Cooking God
is also brilliant. To me, Stephen Chow is the only thing that inspire this
movie and lifting this movie a par above typical comedies, but poor and boring
performances by Karen Mok or mainly just her fussy and irritating acting was
plain awful and spoiling some fun of the movie.
Vincent Kok surprisingly
shines well as Chow's main villain. The overall direction of God of
Cookery is pretty good and is fun to watch and if you ignore the
stupid/bizarre ending - then this movie could well me a fun family movie night
on the sofa. May be it is just me, the movie didn't really appeal to me, but
Stephen Chow's performance is certainly a standout as an usual underdog who
changes and found his inner self and win. Many Chow fans would like this
movie, and in fact many other people too, but I somehow think otherwise. So
you should go and watch it and see it for yourself, but I might probably watch
it again sometime later to see if it proves me wrong, until then God Of
Cookery seems overhyped.
