One of the most famous HK movie franchise known to the
Western world alongside the epic Once Upon A Time in China Series comes a film
that is made 4 years before that. A Chinese Ghost Story is a movie about
romance, action, comedy, suspense, ghost story all mixed together in one big hot
pot... :P With groundbreaking special effects for its time - 1987, it was also
the year where stacks of B-movie that became classics nowadays and this movie is
a perfect example. Starring the late Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong and Wu Ma, with
stunning direction from Hero's action director Ching Siu Tung and produced by
acclaimed HK film maker Tsui Hark, A Chinese Ghost Story was actually though as
a B-movie when it was made, but soon became a classic and great example of an
over-the-top HK movie at its prime. The romance between Cheung and the beautiful
Joey Wong is believable and romantic. What was so great about this film is the
way it mixes action with romance and comedy and terrifically linked together by
great singing from Leslie Cheung and a number of magnificent music score and
songs. Despite all the praise, A Chinese Ghost Story is not without flaws, as it
was at least 15 minutes too short. Just as the romance between Wong and Cheung
was getting interesting and fun, the film quickly accelerates to the climax.
Leslie Cheung plays the character pretty well and is extremely funny at times
notably the part where he kills all the ghost without even knowing...hahaha.
Joey Wong is just beautiful and an excellent eye candy especially in the
bathroom scene :P haha, well it seems that I have so much haha in this review
that this film is becoming a joke, however, this is just part of the fun. The
ending is actually pretty good, as it is not like those Hollywood Happy-ending
routine and plus the famous great wall tongue was something I remember when I
saw it back in 1994, which gave me nightmares, but now it just becomes another
funny moments (in a good way). Well, what more is needed to be say for a film
that probably most of you who have already seen, but the fact that A Chinese
Ghost Story is one of those unique film that mixes all those genre together in a
fast-paced 95 minutes and a sure fun time is ensured.
