Comedy genius Jim Carrey is back! Back to his usual self
after his try-hard serious performance in the long and humorless Majestic.
When I heard saw the previews of Bruce Almighty - I knew at once a good comedy
may well be on the way. The movie starts of pretty slow and the laughs did not
truly takes off until the 20 minutes mark of the movie. And once it takes off,
it is pretty funny to follow, add in the sub plot of being God, romance
problems with his wife, it all adds to the fun.
However, the real problem with Bruce Almighty is not
because it is not funny, but the fact that the movie seems very much to rush
itself to the finish line with an extremely cheesy ending, just like all those
other typical romance-comedy in Hollywood. Don't get me wrong, I liked the
movie and has always thought of Carrey as the US's version of Stephen Chow. As
a feel-good movie it works, but to me, the cheesy ending actually ends the
potential of a much better surprise ending.
Jim Carrey is back to what he does best -
slapstick-comedy and here his performance is almost one of his best in recent
years and his presence here is also very clear. Jennifer Aniston is one
actress that I reckon is improving as each movie goes on, and also has the
looks to make her a likable character. Morgan Freeman is a good actor and a
good actor in serious circumstance, but here he seems wasted in such a role
that is just not him and also ruining his image of being a serious actor.
Well, he is starring in the upcoming Jet Li's drama/thriller/action - Danny
the Dog, so he gets to redeem himself.
Overall, Bruce Almighty is a film - impossible to
dislike, a happy going movie, a good popcorn flick and add in the comedy
presence of Jim Carrey, and the innocence sense of beauty in Jenny Aniston,
making the movie one of the best feel-good movie of the year and movie to
watch with a big crowd. Remember as Carrey says 'Be the Miracle!

P.S. 'Be the miracle!'
