Many psychology students (especially in later years) do some sort of volunteer work, such as at LifeLine, Gay and Lesbian Line, and the Anorexia and Bulimia Foundation. Doing volunteer work might help you gain experience, skills, or understanding, and it might increase your chances of getting into fourth year and post-graduate courses. However it does not suit everyone, and most volunteer agencies require a commitment of a year or more from volunteers, as well as working a certain number of hours per month, so it is not something to enter into lightly. Having said that, volunteer work is certainly a valuable pursuit, and if you want to find out about what volunteer work is available, you can probably find a database of volunteer agencies at your state's volunteer centre. The addresses for each of these is available at Volunteering WA.
