Chapter One - Regionals

By Seth Oleson
CHAPTER ONE
---
"I play Sanga of the Thunder, in attack mode!" James Leigh called out, his long blue-tipped brown hair waving as he threw the card down. His opponent, a girl actually, raised her eyebrows in alarm as the massive monster appeared on the battlefield. James looked up at the banner above him, which read, "Regional Championship: James Vincent Leigh vs. Sara Renee Soybert. "And now that all three parts are in play, I summon the Gate Guardian! Come forth!" With that, Sanga, Suijin and Kazejin fused into one to create the Gate Guardian. Sara's eyes widened in fear as the 3750 Attack monster rose to face her. "Gate Guardian! Attack Beaver Warrior!" James' monster gathered its energy and launched a huge attack on Sara's helpless Beaver Warrior, obliterating it and reducing Sara's Life Points to zero.

"The winner! James Leigh!" The megaphone boomed as the crowd rose to its feet in celebration. James raised his fists in victory as his opponent gathered her Deck, a sullen look on her face.

"Don't look so down," James said with a smirk on his face. "How good did a girl like you ever expect to do against me? The Master of the Gate?" Sara's cheek flushed red as an expression anger played across her face. "After all, Duel Monsters is a man's game. Little girls like you should just run along." Sara's hand whipped around and caught James in the side of the face in a resound slap, leaving a large red mark. James smiled, turned his head around and extended his hand. "Good game. For a girl, at least." Sara took his hand, shook it forcefully, and briskly walked off the field. James looked after her, smiling and shaking his head. "Silly girl. No one can beat the Master of the Gate! Nobody!" He screamed the last part, causing another roar of approval from the audience. Soon, the audience died down, save for one man who stood up and continued clapping. The man was dressed in a smart red suit, and had long silver hair.

"You're..." James looked at him, wide-eyed. The man bowed and smiled.

"Maximillion Pegasus, at your service." Pegasus rose and stepped onto the battlefield, Deck in hand. "That was quite a show you put on, though I do not particularly like your attitude towards your opponent."

"Bah, she was just a girl," James said indignantly. "Girls have no place in Duel Monsters." Pegasus seemed taken aback a bit, but quickly regained his regal manner.

"How would you like to have a little Duel, right here?" Pegasus asked bluntly. The audience murmured to itself as he walked to the opposite side of the field and placed his Deck onto the appropriate place. "I would like to test out this so-called Master of the Gate for myself."

James took a step back, not believing what he was hearing. The great Maximillion Pegasus was challenging him? Surely this was some sort of odd dream, and this was where he would wake up in his bed. He waited. That moment never came. Sighing heavily, he looked up at Pegasus and smiled.

"Maximillion Pegasus, I accept your challenge. May the best man win."
