Story.
Ryu is
a warrior trained in a form of non-lethal Ansatsuken, utilising elements
of judo, karate and koppo to form a solid fighting style. On hearing about
the first Street Fighter tournament (Street Fighter 1), Ryu eagerly enters
himself in to prove his prowess. Quickly advancing to the final bout against
the host of the tournament, Sagat, where
he began to have trouble. As it seemed that Sagat would win, Ryu became
consumed by his own desire to win and felt himself get overtaken by a mysterious
force that propelled him to tear through Sagat with a vicious Metsu Shoryuken.
Leaving his opponent with a large scar upon his chest, Ryu had achieved
victory. Confused by what made him win that battle he returned to his sensei's
training grounds, hoping he would have an answer, but when he returned
he discovered that his sensei had been killed by a warrior named Gouki.
Sensing Gouki's energy, Ryu travelled to find him. (Street Fighter.)
Finally
meeting up with Gouki at his island of Gokuento. He fights with the warrior
and, after a long battle, Gouki explains that Ryu wields the same power
as he does, the Killing Intent (Satsui No Hadou), and says that once it
awakens within him he will become more powerful than ever before. Left
more confused, he remains focused despite Gouki's words, and resorts on
a journey to better himself and find out the meaning of the Killing Intent
(Street Fighter Alpha 2.)
Wavering
between himself and succumbing to the Killing Intent, he continues his
journey to find the answers and to accept new challenges from potential
opponents. One day, a mysterious woman named Rose
came up and warned him of a man named M.Bison-
the leader of a vast organized crime syndicate- who was tracking Ryu down.
She goes on to advise Ryu that he must fight with his soul and not his
physical self or he will lose to Bison's will. Despite her warning, Bison
finally found Ryu- telling him that if he did die, his soul would remain
for ever more within Ryu. Feeling Bison's power trying to take him over,
Ryu discovers the Killing Intent within him, but soon succumbed to Bison's
brainwashing. Defeated by Sagat, disgusted by Bison's control of Ryu, he
managed to overcome the control over his mind as Bison disappeared. Realising
that giving into the want to just win is not the way to go, he overcomes
the Killing Intent and goes on confident of the future matches and potential
he will soon face. (Street Fighter Alpha 3.)
Entering
both the Street Fighter 2, and then the Street Fighter 3 tournament later
on, he continues to hone his skills. After losing to Oro
in the 3rd tournament, he decides to use the loss to motivate himself to
become stronger after realising what power Oro contains. But first, he
travels to Oakland in America to seek out his friend and former training
partner Ken, before finding him in New York. Winning
against Ken, and then against Alex, he encourages
the both of them to keep on fighting before resuming his quest to better
himself. (Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike.)
