The Answer Is: Maybe Not!!
All the equipment manufacturers are bombarding us with the latest and greatest technology. They will be glad to sell you their newest 56k v90 compatible modems. What they don't tell you is, that unless you have a digital phone line from your computer to the phone company's switching gear, you won't connect at anywhere near that speed.
Let me explain. It doesn't help when you have 56k, your ISP has 56k, and the phone company can only handle 28800. Your data will only travel as fast as the slowest link in the hook-up.
Now if you have a 14400k or 28800k, you could benefit from upgrading to either a 33600k or a 56k. I have a 56k v90 modem and I connect to Bellsouth.net at 28800. My partner has a 33600k and he connects to Bellsouth.net at the same speed I do. If you don't use your modem for internet access and just use it for e-mail and faxes, you might be ok where you are. Faxes will only transmit at 14400 regardless of how fast the modem is.
You should upgrade to v90 regardless of the modem speed you have. V90 is the nationally agreed upon standard by which modems communicate. If you have a fairly new modem, you can probably go to the manufacturer's web site and download the v90 flash upgrade for free.
If you have any questions, feel free to E-Mail me. I will be glad to help.
