Verse 1
********
"It was night . . .
when we started
we'd heard a cry
a small sound
needing help
it was in the distance
and so we went,
as always to aid
whoever, whatever
might be lost
in the land named
of never-ending.
|
Verse 2
********
It was always dark
when we went out
it seemed during
the day they
could see and read
of warning signs
posted all along
the borders to see
that this was not
a place one
would want to be
when the sun
went down at dusk.
|
Verse 3
********
But someone would
take a dare unwitting
or a risk uncaring
for either the penalty
or the price to pay,
and now again
we go out to seek
this one or more
who have gotten lost
in this land named
of never-ending . . ."
|
Verse 4
********
"Mostly each search . . .
ended in vain pursuit
we would find footsteps
first in circles
then on hands and knees
until the quicksand
of the deceit of poison
from the dare or risk
took it's toll from one
who should of known
that what they did
was not a choice
they should have made.
|
Verse 5
********
For each is given
the power to know
of what is right
and then of wrong,
so what and where
they went they knew
what the consequences
might be that they
would find once there,
but some are foolish
with choices made
and of those we
went in search of
surely numbered some.
|
Verse 6
********
Now once or twice
each year we might
get fortunate to find
from who this cry
came forth from
but not often
and not enough
to take the risk
that the odds
would favor them . . ."
|
Verse 7
********
"Another day, or week . . .
or months gone bye
we've heard the screams
and cries for help
but to no avail
we searched to find
but this is the way
of life day in, day out
for we are the searchers
of those who are lost
because at night
they feel immortal
to the tempters taunts
and carnal needs.
|
Verse 8
********
So why do we go
and not stay home
comforted by the fire
or enchanted watching
our children at play,
why do we go
when we know
how slim the odds
of maybe finding one
among the ninety
and nine who enter
this land of desolation
called never-ending?
|
Verse 9
********
We go because
when we agreed
to come to this place
that we would do
what we were asked
and to question
not the Master's word
for he sent us not
to whimper or whine
but to do his work
and go after the one
each and every time. . ."
|
Verse 10
********
"Forgotten how many times . . .
we've had to go in search
for the number and the years
have passed quickly
if not painfully for us.
|
Verse 11
********
Each day we hope and pray
"Please Lord, not again."
But we know it is not
our will but His will be done,
and so we prepare ourselves.
So now again a distant cry
and so we dress quickly
our urgency once more
to search and search
hoping this one to find.
But again we have failed
not in the looking
oh we found the remains
but in the timeliness
we failed to arrive in time.
|
Verse 12
********
It seems more frequent
now the cries are heard
and more tired we've become
for there is no rest or sleep
in fear of not finding the one.
|
Verse 13
********
Shall I continue on this way
oh yes my sails are set
my path is know to me
and there are so many
yet we are so very few.
|
Verse 14
********
As now I kneel in prayer
"Oh, Father help us now,
to find this one and maybe
more tonight than before,"
and fight the tears back.
|
Verse 15
********
Quietly "my son" He says
"It's hard I know this way
to have to make you serve."
And then I feel His touch
and know it is His work.
|
Verse 16
********
He is always near
its more a feeling
than knowledge sure
but the warmth could
come from no other.
|
Verse 17
********
So each day, each week
each month, each year
I seek not to disobey
but to go with urgency
when I but hear another cry.
When winded I find myself
wandering in the night
I've never felt alone
why within this sphere
with others lost, I am not.
|
Verse 18
********
Then is when I hear,
in gentle whispers
of the still small voice,
"My child I am with you
and you will never be alone."
|
Verse 19
********
Thinking of all I've seen
and been allowed to know
it is nice to have a friend
who will always be there
so I'll never be alone.
|
Verse 20
********
And searching now again
I feel His hand in mine,
knowing we would find
the one who is crying this night
lost in the land of never-ending. . ."
