Described
by Christine Lavin as "the funniest band of the new Millenium,"
the hilarious combined forces of
David Buskin, Rob Carlson and George Wurzbach
leave audiences gasping with laughter. Each one a brilliant performer in
his own right, the three together are "a cross between Crosby
Stills & Nash and the Marx Brothers."

Special guest Kevin Briody has a warm and unassuming manner (his record label is called Underdog Records) and writes about faith, commitment, and the view from the small Connecticut town where he grew up and now lives with his wife and four children. His songs have earned him mainstage or showcase spots at Kerrville, Newport, and Falcon Ridge festivals, and multiple performing and songwriting awards.
Steve
Gillette and Cindy Mangsen's
marriage brought together two of Folk's brightest stars. Steve, who
literally wrote the book on songwriting ("Songwriting and the Creative
Process") is a charming performer whose songs have been recorded by the
pantheon of folk musicians, starting with Ian & Sylvia's cover of his
"Darcy Farrow" in 1966, and including songs for several Disney movies.
Meanwhile, Cindy, described as "one of the finest singers in American
folk music," built her reputation as a pure ballad singer, backing Tom
Paxton and many others while establishing her solo career. They combine
traditional tunes and originals in a warm and inviting way.
Make
it a twofer! Steve will be pres
enting
a songwriting workshop in Bloomfield, NJ from 1 to 4PM the afternoon of
the show. Sign up for the songwriting workshop, and we'll make your
price for the evening concert $10. Info at
daveythek@aol.com or 973-429-0288.
Special guest Akire Bubar was dubbed "The Voice that could launch a thousand ships" by the Folk Project. After lending that voice to CDs by NJ favorites Mike Agranoff, Liza DiSavino, Patrick Regan and others, she has launched her own career as a singer/songwriter.
Night!

Laura Love , who describes her music as “Afro-Celtic,” is a
folk/funk phenomenon. Crooning her trademark mix of funk, ethnic, folk and jazz, she is an an uninhibited,
authentic
original. Laura uses rhythm, rap, scat, and even yodeling to carry her
high-spirited message, in songs that range from adapted nursery rhymes
to unapologetic odes to her “bootay.” And how many artists do you know
who have
appeared in not only every major folk festival, but also reggae, jazz,
and blues festivals worldwide? A promise: We will be on our feet and
dancing when Laura plays at the Arts Center.
Special guests The Lascivious Biddies are a free-spirited four-woman group that blend jazz, pop, and cabaret styles into some very unconventional arrangements and a crowd-pleasing stage show..
Mad
Agnes are former Hobokenite Margo Hennebach with Mark
Saunders and Adrienne Jones (who toured in the past as Madwoman in the
Attic). D
eeply spiritual though not secular, they move an audience from
joyful participation to deep and hushed emotion, using only their
tone-perfect harmonies and elegant musicianship. After a concert,
"songwriter's songwriter" Bob Franke said: "I wept more than once.
Hooray for you."
Special guest
Jonathan Pointer
writes wry, darkly comic songs that are reminiscent of Randy Newman, and
delivers them with a Tom Waits-like baritone intensity.
NOTE: Jonathan replaces Michael Hsu, who will appear later in our
schedule
After
thirty years as a staple of FM radio, major-label recording contracts,
and worldwide touring, Rex Fowler
and Neal Shulman have proved their place as one of Folk's most
popular and enduring duo
s.
Now on their 30th-anniversary tour and with both a new studio album and
a 34-song collection of rare and unreleased tracks, they continue to wow
audiences around the world with intelligent songwriting, hot acoustic
lead guitar, and great harmonies.
New York hipsters Dave's True Story combine literate Gershwin-like wordplay and jazz-noir melodies in a style reminiscent of Tom Waits or Steely Dan.

Darryl Purpose is the kind of guy you'd love to meet for a beer.
Once the world's top blackjack player, he crisscrossed the United States
for nine months as a peace activist, and then walked across the Russian
heartland, a walk that ended with his organizing the first-ever outdoor
stadium rock concert in the former Soviet Union, with Bonnie Raitt,
James Taylor, and others. Even without a beer, hearing Darryl tell his
stories in words and song is a riveting experience, as audiences at
scores of major folk festivals and venues can affirm. He is rightly
called "America's most original narrative sto
ry-teller
since Harry Chapin," and his songs "hit all the vital areas: the heart,
the mind and the gut."
Montclair's Jessica Owen, who first got notice as Jessica Schoenberg, seems to have a way with television producers: Her songs have been featured on several shows, including "Providence" and "Party of Five." Must be her upbeat songwriting and direct and honest tales.
