Jeff Barnhart

Fast and Funny Pianist Jeff Barnhart Returns
"The Victor Borge of Jazz," and a Flutist Too

CONCERT:
Friday, Jan 10, 2003
8pm  $12

Jeff Barnhart is one of the major attractions of the Great Connecticut Jazz Fest each year, and event that draws thousands to a remote corner of that state.  Why Jeff Barnhart?  Because he can play piano with speed and accuracy, holding his own with the best of the world's stride players.  In addition, he can be quite amusing in his presentation, reminding many of Victor Borge, but playing some really hot jazz.

Pianist Jeff Barnhart will make a return visit to the Watchung Arts Center's venerable Jazz Series on Friday evening, January 10.  This time he'll be accompanied by his wife Anne Barnhart, a highly accomplished flutist.  They have a program of rags and swinging jazz that makes exceptional use of both instruments, developed at appearances across the country.  But this will be their first duet concert in New Jersey.

The music starts at 8 PM, and the ticket prices have been held to $12, including intermission refreshments.  Advance reservations for the limited seating are strongly suggested, though.  They may be made by phone, calling (908) 753-0190 and leaving a message outside office hours (generally 1 to 4 PM).  Tickets will be held for pickup and payment at the door.

Jeff Barnhart logs over 100,000 air miles a year playing jazz piano.  He tours with two bands, plus has so many solo dates that every weekend in 2003 is already spoken for.  Festivals build their schedules around his, because he can bring a band, perform as a soloist and play lively duets with other pianists.  He hardly has an idle set, yet his energy level is such that he's usually the last to retire after the late night jam sessions.

Anne Barnhart has earned her substantial musical credentials mainly in the classical field, graduating Magna Cum Laude in her flute studies.  She's even listed in the International Who's Who in Music.  But having advanced degrees in music is only the start of her venture into jazz.  Playing with Jeff, who claims to know ten thousand tunes, has expanded her repertoire to run from ragtime through traditional jazz and into swing music.

To demonstrate the viability of the flute and piano combination, they've recorded a CD that has earned considerable critical acclaim.  Of course, at any live performance, Jeff cannot be held to the script, so he's apt to lead them into uncharted depths, much to the delight of the audience, usually made up of hard core jazz fans.

The Jazz Series makes its home at the non-profit Watchung Arts Center, located on the Watchung Circle.  It is easily reached from throughout the region via Route 22 (Plainfield overpass) or Interstate 78 (exit 40).  The proximity of major highways has allowed jazz fans from three states to congregate here for over a dozen years.  Parking is free at adjacent municipal lots.
