Tenth Annual Competition Draws Outstanding Prints, Slides
and entries from all over the world
This is truly a world class event, attracting the finest examples of the photographic art from every corner of the globe. Even in this age of digital imaging, still photographic prints and slides are considered a dynamic art form. This show represents darkroom artistry at its best. The entries are gathered from all over the world, this year including such places as Hungary, Turkey, Egypt and Vietnam.
The Watchung Arts Center is hosting the tenth Garden State International Photography Salon, a show where talented photographers will get a chance to compare, compete and enjoy each others work. Judging, which may be witnessed by the public, takes place all day on Saturday, May 2.
There will be a public reception on Saturday, May 16, at 7-9:30 p.m. with refreshments for all. There is no admission charge. The outstanding slide entries presentation begins at 8 PM. The winners will be announced at the reception, where hundreds of prints will be displayed. These outstanding prints and the winning prints will hang in the Gallery from May 9 through 30. Gallery hours are 1 to 4 PM Saturdays and weekdays.
Six accomplished photographers make up the panel of experienced judges who will select the best of each category. This year's distinguished panel of judges includes Marie Kane (Glen Rock, NJ), Sid Goldstein (Levittown, NY), Barbara Lewis-White (Long Branch, NJ), Rev. Charles Bomboy (Phillipsburg, NJ), Dan Heidel (Boise, ID) Jack Worthen (Appleton, WI) with alternates: Al Stoeckert and Andre J. Cantelmo Sr.
Many amateur photographers have enough confidence in their skills and creativity to enter international competition with their work. Entries to the Garden State International are "amateur" only to the extent that the entrants are not being paid for their work. They compete for peer recognition. Skilled "lens artists" spend hours working on the perfect shot, be it a portrait, landscape, action shot, etc. Many are enhanced or altered through darkroom techniques, resulting in images that would be impossible to see in real life. The categories are wide open, including subjects such as nature, portraits, landscapes and contemporary subject.
