Jazz Mandolin? Strings Break New Ground
Scotch Plains' Barry Mitterhoff at Arts Center
Banjo? Yes. Guitar? Of course. Violin? Sometimes. But a jazz program for mandolin? To be truthful, Barry Mitterhoff will also play the tenor banjo, but mandolin will feature heavily in this unusual, groundbreaking jazz concert.
Celebrated mandolinist Barry Mitterhoff will lead a trio for the Jazz Series at the Watchung Arts Center. He will be backed by guitarist Joe Skelly and bassist/pianist Larry Cohen in a program that will cover a wide range of jazz styles, from early influences (ragtime and Dixieland) through later styles (Klezmer, swing, even bebop). The August 7 concert begins at 8 PM, with tickets priced at only $10, including intermission snacks.
Scotch Plains resident Barry Mitterhoff has filled Watchung's acoustic Gallery several times before, but always for fans of folk music, bluegrass and related styles. His international reputation was built upon his versatility though, having recorded with noted opera stars as well as folk singers. He's studied with Jethro Burns (of the famed Homer and Jethro), performed with popular banjoist Tony Trischka, and appeared at the Smithsonian and on Prairie Home Companion, in addition to concert halls and festivals throughout three continents. He has put together a pure jazz program especially for the Watchung date, though.
He's accompanied by longtime friend Joe Skelly, a guitarist with an equally
broad command of diverse musical styles. Skelly has recorded with a wide range of artists,
from Bo Diddley to Phoebe Snow. Bassist/pianist Larry Cohen rounds out the group, a
skilled musician and arranger whose credits run from classical through rock, with many
stops between. This performance is dedicated to renowned jazz guitarist Ted Dunbar, who
worked with and influenced these musicians earlier in their careers.
The intimacy of the Center's Gallery coupled with the past popularity of these players suggests advance reservations. This may be done by telephone, calling (908) 753-0190, preferably during the 1 to 4 PM office hours. Tickets will be held at the door, even if messages are left on the voice mail.
