The Ingenious Jazz Piano and Vocals of Dena DeRose
On Saturday, December 12th at 8pm the Watchung Arts Center is pleased to present the superb piano playing and exceptionally versatile vocals of Dena DeRose. DeRose is not only a remarkable jazz stylist but an arranger, composer and teacher. She is her own best accompanist singing staccato, laying words a swinging piano rhythm. Her playing reflects a lifetime of piano studies and put together with her love for lyrics and harmony, Dena blossoms.
A native of Binghamton, New York, Dena began piano at the age of three after her mother heard her picking out melodies on a toy chord organ. She continued building her skills and fluency and then in college she discovered jazz. From there she just kept on going, establishing a career as a jazz pianist, performing with Slam Stewart and Major Holley to name a few. In the 80s Dena suffered a series of hand surgeries which interrupted her career. Being unable to give up her music, she soon discovered her voice. Once she made a full recovery, she was able to integrate her piano playing with song and then Dena DeRose had a style and sound, all her own.
Dena enjoys writing, playing and singing which comes out to her audience. Last year Dena DeRose was a much talked about performer, someone you were sorry you missed. Thats why the Watchung Arts Center has brought Dena back for another concert. Dont miss this one, on Saturday, December 12th at 8pm. Tickets are only $10 which includes an intermission with light refreshments. Reservations for our Saturday performances are recommended and can be made by calling (908) 753-0190.
Along with her competence as a performer, Dena has taken her knowledge and experience into a lecture and seminar venue. Being in class with an instructor of such excellence will bring insight youve never heard before. Dena says to her students, "Once you learn the melody exactly as its meant to be sung, only then can you sing it the way you want." Im sure all jazz vocalists from Ella Fitzgerald to Barbara Streisand will agree.
