Groundhog Day Swing Jam
|
CONCERT:
|
The Watchung Arts Center's 13 year old Jazz Series is mainly a Friday
night affair, but there have been requests for daytime events, particularly from
those uncomfortable with night driving. The GROUNDHOG DAY JAM meets those
needs, in spades.
The GROUNDHOG DAY JAM will be run, of course, on Sunday, February 2 at the Watchung Arts Center, with the music starting at 2 PM. There will be two sets played by an all-star band, yet the admission is only $15. Better yet, it's just $12 if you buy your tickets in advance. And light intermission refreshments are included in those prices.
The musicians have been hand picked to deliver freewheeling, unscripted jazz for two hours that afternoon, in the acoustic gallery, where amplification is needed only for the vocals. Leading the band is trombonist Herb Gardner, who will also play a bit of piano. Randy Reinhart will play trumpet, while Dan Levinson handles various reed instruments.
The rhythm section boasts Robbie Scott on drums, with
Bruce McNichols playing banjo and Joe Hanchrow on tuba. Abbie Gardner will sing
a few sel
ections
at each set. These musicians lead their own groups and have all figured
prominently in major jazz events throughout the area.
The format is informal, allowing the musicians to stretch their imaginations with solos while encouraging interplay between them. Usually there is some good natured banter between the musicians who, drawn from different bands, don't often have the chance to play together. The audience generally enjoys this, being close enough to follow everything that is going on.
Seating will be limited to 150 people. Given the
caliber of the musicians and the low ticket price, e
arly
purchase is strongly suggested. The advance purchase discount makes it
attractive financially, too.
Send checks to the Watchung Arts Center, 18 Stirling Road, Watchung, NJ 07069. Tickets will be sent by return mail or, if last minute, held at the door. Checks must be received in advance to earn the discount. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door. Call (908) 753-0190 for further information.
The Jazz Series makes its home at the non-profit Watchung Arts Center, located on the Watchung Circle. It is easily reached from throughout the region via Route 22 (Plainfield overpass) or Interstate 78 (exit 40). Parking is free adjacent to the building or at nearby municipal lots. A chairlift in the rear assists those with special needs.
