The Howard Fishman Quartet
|
CONCERT: Saturday, March 10, 2001 at 8:00pmTickets: $12.00 |
Getting back to roots is Howard's musical raison d'etre.
A professional actor since childhood, Howard received his formal training
in acting, writing and directing from the theatre at Vassar College.
While there, he also began to play guitar and explore the music of
artists like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. Through
them, Howard began the backward exploration that finally hit pay dirt in the
music of the early part of this century. Howard's quest became so intense that he made a pilgrimage to
New Orleans where he studied blues, ragtime and early jazz at the feet of
numerous old-timers like the late Danny Barker, a guitar and banjo player who
had played with Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington.
Howard Fishman and his Quartet have been playing to
packed and sold-out rooms in New York City for the last two years, performing in
such NYC venues as The Mercury Lounge, Pete s Candy Store, The Algonquin Room,
Sardi's and Joe's Pub. The Quartet
has also performed at private events for New
York Magazine, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
and most recently a benefit for Rhode Island
School of Design honoring architect, Frank
Gehry and Yale University.
Bringing influences from jazz, pop, country and New Orleans style blues, critics have compared The Howard Fishman Quartet to Lou Reed, Hoagy Carmichael, Tom Waits and Buster Keaton. The line-up includes Howard Fishman on vocals and guitar, Russell Farhang on violin, Jonathon Flaugher on upright bass and ex-Galatica member Erik Jekabson on trumpet.
The Quartet has released their second CD in February 2001 called I Like You A Lot.
