"Cohesion and elegant execution characterize this trio. They have, in a most eloquent way, captured the essence of jazz," says Stereo Review, giving their latest CD four stars. Phrases such as "rare excitement," "glowing passion," "absolutely delightful" and "interesting and unusual" pop up in other reviews.

These words are describing the Bluth/Messina/Chattin Trio, a threesome that has achieved regional popularity in recent years. They will play for the first time at the Watchung Arts Center on Friday, January 26, as part of the venerable Jazz Series there. Seats are only $12 for the performance, with light intermission refreshments included in that most reasonable price. Music starts at 8 PM and runs two sets.

For those not yet familiar with the mellow jazz of Larry Bluth (piano), Don Messina (bass) and Bill Chattin (drums), this con-cert could be an eye-opener. They have been praised by everyone from Jazz Times and Cadence to the Jazz Educators Journal. Their performances feature a lot of their own original material, inspired by the classics, with some recognized standards sprinkled over each set.

The group has several CDs, including their newly released Formations, that have enjoyed strong positive reviews. An earlier release, Live at Orfeo, was selected as among the Best of the Year by noted authority Dan Morgenstern of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers, and they've been played widely on WBGO. "This trio is warm and complement each other very well," writes
one reviewer of the earlier CD. The music is "refreshing, never predictable," he continues. "Fans of piano jazz will enjoy this CD." And this concert as well.

Watchung's gallery is an intimate room, with the audience almost within reach of the players. Its crisp acoustics make amplification unnecessary, much like "playing in someone's living room," as one performer put it.

The Watchung Arts Center is easily reached from throughout north and central New Jersey via Interstate 78 (exit 40) or Route 22 (Plainfield overpass). Parking is available at newly-paved lots adjacent to their building on the Watchung Circle, or at nearby municipal lots.

Although tickets are sold at the door, it is best to reserve your seats by calling (908) 753-0190. Outside of their afternoon office hours, a message can be left on their voice mail, and the tickets will be waiting.
