Two Harps, Two Voices
Folk Sounds of Harper’s Bizarre

Concert: Saturday, July 31, at 8:00pm

On Saturday, July 31, at 8:00pm, the Watchung Arts Center will bring you one of the finest duets around. Harpers Bizarre combines the voices of Debbie Brewin-Wilson and Kathy DeAngelo with their traditional Celtic sound on harp. Both these women have solid reputations playing bluegrass harmonies and Gershwin standards with a flair unmatched. They are not your quiet harpists sitting blending into the background of a elegant dinner, they are there to be heard. Tickets are only $10 and can be reserved by calling (908) 753-0190.

Harpers Bizarre plays "Blues Mothers" with sultry voices in a double-harp version of their own making. Their Everly Brother’s style vocal duet of "Let it Be Me" redefines it’s classic beginnings. They sings and perform American and British folksongs and always include a Celtic foot-stomper like "The Athol Highlander."

Kathy DeAngelo has been performing traditional Irish music for over 20 years and performs also as half of the Irish band, McDermott’s Handy with her husband, Dennis Gormley. She is a multi-instrumentalist who plays Celtic harp, fiddle, 5-string banjo, mandolin, bodhran and an occasional guitar. And if that’s not enough she also sings both English and Gaelic. Her harp playing is solid and driving.

Debbie Brewin-Wilson won the Scottish Harp Society of America’s National Amateur championship in 1991 and continues to build headlining for various Celtic festivals and clubs such as the Mine Street Coffeehouse, The Candlelight Coffeehouse and Bonnie Brae Scottish Festival to name only a few. Debbie has been adding ballads to the repertoire, delighting audiences with sing along. Both Debbie and Kathy conduct the Harpers" Escape Weekend each Fall at the Jersey Shore, teaching harp techniques and mentoring harp players.

Debbie is also a songwriter with a splendid talent for wit and humor in song. Her recording of "Roots and Wings" released in February 1998 features many of her songs. This is a sweet sound with a driving excitement and it reveals the joy which these two women feel for their art.
