The "Folkies" version of Mark Russell
John Forester |
Concert: Saturday, February 13th at 8pm |
On Saturday, February 13th at 8pm the Watchung Arts Center presents John Forster, a leading musical satirist. Johns acerbic wit and sense of melodic invention are what puts him above the rest. John grew up in Philadelphia and lived off and on in Europe. He began writing and performing at an early age, with his own unique brand of musical theater. Strongly influenced by composers like Bernstein, Sondheim, he wrote book musicals for "Into the Light" on Broadway, "The Dream Team" and the widely produced "Eleanor". His Off-Broadway songs include hits from "Upstairs at ONeals", "Pretzels" in which he starred and "Let Freedom Sing" at Kennedy Center. He recently wrote the book and lyrics for a musical version of "Freaky Friday" with Mary Rodgers. He also composes and produces childrens music such as Tom Chapin (on Sony), the music videos of the Olsen Twins and Rosenshontz.
John Forster is one of the sharpest and funniest of a new breed of satirical singer/songwriters. His own critically acclaimed first solo album, "Entering Marion" was released in 1994 and won the NAIRD. His latest release, "Helium" is cutting, riotous and hilarious. He is a true master of musical satire and high-brow humor. This, combined with an uncanny sense of the stage and his audience, makes him a phenomenal performer and entertainer. The Boston Phoenix said, "Forster has the world view of George Carlin and the musical parody chops of Frank Zappa." Harvard magazine says, "Forester kills with laughter."
The accolades go on, but perhaps the Legendary Tom Lehrer put it best, "You dont need me any more. Youve got John Forster to kick around."
