The Dirdy Birdies Jug Band
to appear at the Watchung Arts Center
The Dirdy Birdies will bring to the Watchung Arts Center their show Mid-Life Crisis which celebrates the bands 33rd year of performing. Working together for this many years defines the tightness of the group. They love what they do, and youll love it too. This band is a musical hybrid and the repertoire reflects the tastes of each of its seven members. You are likely to hear traditional jug band tunes performed back to back with gospel, folk, bluegrass, and even some doo-wop. They have a current release, Endangered Species which mixes all these musical styles.
Descendants of the long standing tradition of jug bands, which began during the early part of the century as "spasm" bands, and consisted of street musicians with little or no formal training. Their imaginative use of home-made instruments and tight vocal harmonies carried them through. The Dirdy Birdies have become veterans on the folk scene all along the Northeast and even toured in Great Britain. In addition to the music, humor and theater play large roles in this act which has been honed for many years.
Starting at 8pm on Saturday, June 27th at the Watchung Arts Center, come see the special talents of the Dirdy Birdies jug band. This is a performance that sets the audience roaring and stomping, from the school age children to the seniors.
