Create a Gift

Tuesday, December 4th and continues on Saturday, December 8th – Create a beautiful Seasonal themed tray.  Students will learn the basics of preparing wood for paint, and transferring patterns.  A gift that someone on your list will enjoy for years to come!

Crafts Around the World

Tues., December 18th - Tinsmithing: 

Craft an ornament! In Mexico, brightly colored ornaments made of tin are found in many stores and markets.  Tinsmithing was introduced to the Central American Indians by the Spanish.  Your ornaments can be displayed at the holidays or hung in windows at other times of the year.

Sat., December 22nd  - Fans:  

In the heat of Japan’s summers, the Japanese have used fans called uchiwa, made of split bamboo and washi, a special Japanese paper.  At the Watchung Arts Center, we have our own version of this fan and will show you how to create one of your own! (Cost $15M, $20NM)

Tues., January 8th  – Scherenschnitte

Create nature scenes within a heart – means “scissors cut” in German.  It refers to the craft of cutting elaborate designs in paper to make beautiful works of art and dates back to the mid-1600’s. 
(Cost $10M, $15NM)

Sat., January 12th  - “Bark” painting:

Bark was a popular medium for drawing and writing before the invention of paper.  The aboriginal peoples of Australia painted on tree bark.  Now, you can too!  
(Cost $20M, $25NM)

Mon., January 21st  - 10am-4pm, Crafts All Day! (bring your lunch) 

“When school is closed, check to see if the WAC is Open, and we are open on 1/21/02!”  The day will be filled with activities including making a Dream Catchers, straight out of a book of Native American lore.  They trap the bad dreams and let the good dreams filter down to the sleeper.  Many other surprises.  
(Cost $40M, $45NM) – discount for siblings.

Class sizes are limited, so register early!  Classes make wonderful gifts, Gift Certificates are available!
