On Friday, June 1, 2001, the Watchung Arts Center is again presenting its new series entitled “ImpresaRIO in which regional favorite pianist Rio Clemente is the constant musical element. The concert features Rio paired with his favorite artists performing material especially selected and adapted to showcase the particular skills of each musician.
This month “ImpresaRIO” will feature the Wooster Street Trolley Jazz Band , which is know for its exuberance brand of Dixieland Jazz, humorous delivery and ability to tailor each performance to fit the mood of that audience. Their music combines lively instrumental stylings on traditional New Orleans favorites like Wolverine Blues and High Society with novelty numbers from the 1920’s like Who and Putting on the Ritz, which display the groups’ solo and ensemble vocal talents. Lynn Chris of the Pennsylvania Jazz Society remarks, “ I have been listening to this band for over 15 years and I still get that musical thrill every time hear the Wooster Street Trolley Jazz Band!”
We hope the series name, “ImpresaRIO”, will be a unique reminder of the new format and also of the extraordinarily talented musical Director/Performer who will be the heartbeat of this latest Art Center offering. Trio Clemente has played with an almost endless list of jazz greats including Joe Venuti, Bobby Hackett, Bucky Pizarlli, Coleman Hawkins, Clark Terry, Brian Torff and Joe Cocuzzo. He has played at Carnegie Hall, at the Weill auditorium with Milt Hinton and Ronnie Cole, as well as playing the music of Harry Warren at Lincoln Center’s Avery Hall. He has six albums currently available from Richard Rogers to Gershwin to two volumes of hymns of inspiration.
September 7th and October 5th (both Fridays at 8pm) are firm dates. The remainder of the Spring and Summer season is being planned now.
