CONCERT: Friday, September 17, 1999 at 8pm |
The daughter of a Rhode Island bandleader, Daryl Sherman was nurtured on standards by piano whiz Dave McKenna and Artie Shaw. She first took the stage at age twelve and hasnt looked back since. Taken under the wing of the incredible Sylvia Syms in the 1970s, Daryl absorbed sass and swing. After her arrival in New York, Daryl sat in with such notables as Milt Hinton, George Duvivier and Bobby Hackett.
She has an appreciation and passion for lyrics that has made her a extraordinary pianist, singer and arranger with a warm presence. She has impeccable taste and an unerring sense of style bringing her to the top of todays classical jazz singers.
Daryl Sherman has a distinctive style which is expressive fresh and flexible. Her vocal phrasing and sensitivity to words will show her audience there is something new to say about the songs we know by heart. She writes her own material exemplifying an old-style Manhattan sophistication. Her improvisation and range brings magic to her audience.
This concert is a celebration of Daryls newest release, " Lady Must Live". This album features an all-star cast with cameos by Tommy Flanagan and Frank Wess and has been described as a "tapestry of moods".
Accompanying Daryls voice and piano is Dennis Irwin on bass and James Chirillo on guitar. The three musicians blend and bend together exploring and restoring shine to old standards. They play off one another, creating a sound that is both youthful and authoritative.
