Berkeley Heights artist Jim Fuess will be presenting a solo show of his new black and white paintings entitled "Full Circle" at the Watchung Arts Center on the circle in Watchung NJ from July 13-August 13. A reception to meet the artist is scheduled for Sunday July 18 from 1-4pm.
Jim Fuess is the former Vice President of Visual Arts and Executive Board Member at the Watchung Arts Center and this will be seven years since his introductory solo show at Watchung.
Jim Fuess comments that " I have just finished over 40 small black and white paintings which are a return to the basics of form and structure. When my work has been stuck in the past I have found it helpful to go back to my beginnings. The work deals with the limits of the edge of the canvas and the conflict between forms, structures, negative space and peoples within the given area. In the past I would do a few of these paintings and revert to the bright colors that my work is known for. This time I stayed with the B&W format for over a year."
Most of Mr. Fuess work is done with liquid acrylic paint. The work is abstract but there are recognizable forms or faces in a lot of his paintings. The work is lyrical, energetic and sometimes spooky and humorous.
Mr. Fuess has lived in New Zealand, Africa and South America for two years each and a total of seven years in Italy. He holds a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Comparative Religions from Goddard College, and has done two years of Ph.D. work in Comparative Literature.
Jim Fuess has had over 40 solo shows and over 100 group shows in his career.
