Carla White Sings from the Heart CONCERT:Friday, November 21, 1998 at 8 PM
Carla White never considered jazz a hobby, an experiment or a leap until something else came around. Carla claims jazz is her heart and soul. Born in Oakland, CA Carla was raised in Bellport New York. At 14 she discovered jazz and though she studied dance and theater once she was accepted to the prestigious Webber-Douglas Academy of Art in London her career changed. She found her voice and spent a full year traveling throughout Europe and North Africa singing on the street. When she returned to New York, her mind was set and she began searching for a mentor. She found Lennie Tristano who Carla worked with for four years building her jazz vocabulary. From there, Carla began concentrating on scat singing and creating with her voice a unique instrument. From there it wasn’t long before she was noticed. In 1984 with her bebop quintet Carla recorded her first album Andruline. In 1987 she produced Orient Express, named as on of the "Best Albums" of the year by Jazziz Magazine. Her third album, Mood Swings exemplifies her love of jazz and lyric.

Many vocalists can produce effective-sounding spontaneous melodic lines, using syllables to articulate notes in the style of an instrumentalist. But few do it with White’s harmonic awareness and creative imagination," says Don Heckman.

Carla is a fan of Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter and Lorenz Hart and claims her theatrical training has made her sensitive to the construction of lyric and rhyme. While White’s latest album, "Listen Hear", sways from the soft and sweet to the strong and vibrant, her distinctive voice is expressive while being aggressive, adding a touch of her soul to each tune.

With Carla will be pianist Ted Rosenthal and the great bassist, Dean Johnson who works with her regularly. Dean was a steady member of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet from 1985 . His performance with the quartet include numerous concerts and jazz festivals throughout Europe and the USA. Dean studied with Gary Peacock and attended Berkley College of Music in Boston. Over the years Dean has performed with many great jazz musicians such as Sonny Stitt, Milt Jackson, Clifford Jodan, Richie Cole and others.
