Welcome to the Nature Kids Class website. This month, the Nature Kids will be selling Wildlife Calendars for $5.00! Please help support us by purchasing one! So what is this class about? We are all about nature! Currently, we are studying about Native American cultures through a unit called Pocket Pals. The idea is that the youth will go home at the end of the eight classes and show what they have learned. The first unit will be about the Inuit people and will include a Native American dictionary with words like caribou and igluviak. There is also a map, cultural information and a craft that goes with each unit. We will also continue our fundraising efforts for supplies. If you could help donate through money or items, we would greatly appreciate it. The Wish List of some of our needs are at the bottom.
The Nature Kids released the painted lady butterflies around the JFK Center. We also planted, with the donations and support of the Sisters of Mercy, a buttefly garden at the side of the PT Building. There are milkweed plants, butterfly bushes and all sorts of plants to attract them next year. The Sisters of Mercy also donated money for flowers and coupons for more free flowers. The youth chose flowers from Stan's Garden Center and planted them at the front and side of the PT Building. It looks great! If you would like to see pictures of these activities, please check out the Gallery page!
Since we enjoyed the butterflies so much, we are participating in the Journey North Symbolic Voyage Program. This is an internet site that allows youth to color butterflies and send them South to Mexico. The idea is that it would be a cultural exchange too. Youth from Erie would place information about themselves on the butterflyl and then send them to Mexico. Just like in real life, not all the butterflies will return North to us in the Spring. Those that do will contain information about where they were and what child got our butterfly. If you would like to participate in this program, please see the Links Page. There is also a place for your organization to register and record your sightings on monarchs and other animal observations. It is a very educational website.
Thank you to all the kids who come to the classes. Look for new crafts and lessons coming your way! Our goal is to teach kids that there are more things to life than just drugs, violence and what's happening in the streets. If we can just get one kid to listen, it will all be worthwhile. Thank you to all who have helped out!
