PROJECT OVERVIEW
This is a HSSRP project done by us,
three Chinese High Students, under an NUS mentorship. This is our
first experience with a mentorship, so we may be a bit raw in many
areas, but thanks to ours mentors' help, we did manage to polish it
up quite a bit.
From the title, Voluntarism in
Singapore, you can probably tell what our project is all about, but
it isn't as simple as the title seems. Yes, we are going to find out
Singaporeans' (main focus on students) views on voluntarism: how often
they do it, why they are motivated and not motivated to do it, their
general attitude towards it and their suggestions and personal feedback.
Unlike previous projects we've done, the scale of this project is
very much larger: not just the simple research, survey and conclusion.
Instead, the steps we will need to take are much more tedious, and
coupled with the busy schedule of Secondary 3 life, we know it just
won't be easy.
Yes, indeed this project will require
much more work. We're not just trying to find out the superficial
reasons for voluntarism, but the inner thoughts and motivations for
doing voluntary work. By the way, we consider voluntarism to be strictly
voluntary, and by this we will try to differentiate between the 6
compulsory CIP hours that students need to fulfill and the extra voluntary
work that they do in their own free time. We will also be trying to
discover factors that drive a person to volunteer, and the reasons
why he doesn't. Of course, we will also be exploring the countless
excuses people give to reject voluntary work.
At the end of the day, we will gather
all the motivators and non-motivators and come up with a general conclusion
to the trend of voluntarism in Singapore. Our final aim is to find
a satisfactory solution to encourage and drive our people to volunteer.
After all, that little bit of time can go a long way for the less
fornutate.
