        EPISODE GUIDE

               Episode # 42 - The Ties of Friendship (2)

The Duel for the Blue Eyes White Dragon continues.  Yugi has the Summoned Skull of the field while Rebecca has the Cannon Soldier and Millennium Shield equipt with the Ring of Magnetism.  Yugi still believes that Grandpa didn't steal the card but Rebecca knows her grandfather cherished the card and believes that he would never give it away.  Grandpa tries to say something about his friend, Arthur Hawkins.  Rebecca doesn't want to hear his excuses.  Grandpa starts his story anyway.  Years ago, Grandpa was a archeologist in Egypt.   There he met Rebecca's grandfather, Arthur Hawkins.  He described him as a good man with a youthful smile. But the archaeological field saw him as a heretic. Tea asks why and he answers because he was also interested in Duel Monsters as well. He explains that in his research of ancient writing, he discovered a word that was used very often, “Game.”

The scene switches to one of Arthur and Grandpa in a Egyptian Tomb looking at Hieroglyphics. Arthur translates that the Egyptians exchanged scrolls to predict the future. To make prophecies, they held rituals. This was the game. A ritual card game. Grandpa looks at the Hieroglyphics and Arthur tells him to look at his card deck and on top is the Giant Soldier of Stone. Arthur holds up the lantern to a picture on the wall that is a exact match of the one on the card. He explains that the card game they play now must have been based on the games the ancient Egyptians used to play.  It was a great discovery that would have rocked ancient Egyptian history but the scientific community thought Arthur was crazy but that didn’t stop him.  He continued researching this and Grandpa agreed with what he had discovered.  They became good friends.  He also believed in the existence of something called "God Cards" which triggers another flashback.  Arthur is explaining to Grandpa that if you collected all of the God Cards, then you can become the ruler of the world with that power.  According to the prophecy, whoever collected all three of the cards will have power to control the world.  Arthur says that the puzzle of the God Cards is not very easy to decipher and he wants to use the rest of his life to research them.  Tea asks if he got the Blue Eyes from him and he says yes.

Grandpa tells of a time when they were trapped in a tomb with no food and enough water for one person only.  Arthur asks Solomon (Grandpa) if he would like to play a game.  Grandpa suggests the winner gets the last drop of water.  Arthur agrees and starts playing the same way Rebecca did.  Grandpa asks Rebecca if Arthur taught her how to play.  Tea asks how the duel ended but Rebecca interrupts saying she wants to make her move.  Grandpa says to himself that its almost like Arthur is playing right now. Yugi draws a card and plays his Catapult Turtle in attack mode (L5 1000/2000). He reminds Rebecca on how it sacrifices a monster and takes half it's attack power and damages the opponent directly.  He uses Brain Control to take the Millennium Shield and launches it.  It has no attack points so Rebecca's LP stay the same but the Ring of Magnetism is gone.  He attacks with his Summoned Skull and destroys the Cannon Solider and Rebecca falls to 200 LP.

Rebecca expected this from a champion duelist.  She doesn't think it is time to play her Shadow Ghoul and plays the magic card Judgment Bomber.  She explains for sacrificing 5 monster cards from her hand, she can destroy all the monsters on the field.  She will win now for sure (Right Teddy?)  No Rebecca plays her favorite card, the Shadow Ghoul (1600/1300).  She says it gets 100 LP for every monster card in her graveyard.  She has 11 monsters in her graveyard do it has 2700 attack points.  Yugi sees that she sent her cards to the grave only to power up her Shadow Ghoul. Yugi then says that it is important to believe in the heart of your cards and asks isnt it a bit much to send her cards to the graveyard to power up her monster. Rebecca calls him a idiot saying that Duel Monsters dont have hearts. "Win at any cost," to her, that's how a duelist should be. She then turns to Grandpa and says he's just making up lies to cover up for stealing the Blue Eyes. She says that Arthur taught her that Duel Monsters are just a duelist's weapons. Yugi thinks to himself that he knows how the duel between Arthur and Grandpa ended. Grandpa just thinks to himself that Yugi should just do what he has to. They both nod and Rebecca runs her mouth, asking how long is he going to keep a lady waiting so Yugi draws a card and places it in reverse defense. Rebecca draws her card and asks Yugi if he believes in luck and plays her magic card, Stop Defense. Yugi's Black Magician is now in attack mode and the Shadow Ghoul destroys it easily and takes Yugi down to 800 Life Points.

On Yugi's turn, he plays his Swords of Revealing Light to stop Rebecca's Shadow Ghoul for 3 turns. Rebecca is confident in herself and forgoes her turn and passes. Yugi takes his turn and plays Monster Reborn to revive the Dark Magician. Rebecca thinks he's only trying to block her attack after the Swords of Revealing Light disappear. She then plays her Cannon Soldier defense.  Yugi knows that he can’t just leave it there so he attacks and destroys it, and it boosts the Shadow Ghoul up another 100 points. Joey notes that Yugi seems to be waiting on some card to turn up so he can make a comeback. Rebecca hears him and says the same thing but she figures it will be over by the time her Shadow Ghoul is released from the spell of the Swords of Revealing Light. She passes on this turn too and now the Shadow Ghoul is free to attack again. Grandpa gets another flashback of the duel with Arthur and he is saying that he will pass on this turn. Grandpa is about to take his turn and Arthur asks what is he waiting on but Grandpa says that's a secret.

Back in the present, Yugi draws a card and looks at it.  Rebecca asks is that the card he was waiting on. Grandpa remembers back to the duel he had and he too is staring at the card he picked up. Arthur is watching him, ready to pass out for he has not had water.  Grandpa then places his hand on his deck and announces he surrenders, Arthur wins. Yugi is still looking at the card and then places it on top of his deck, covers his deck with his hand and says he surrenders. Everyone but Grandpa is shocked at this move. Rebecca congratulates herself, calling herself the best and marches right up to Grandpa and asks for the Blue Eyes. Grandpa pulls from his pocket a taped up Blue Eyes White Dragon, from when Kaiba ripped it. Rebecca figures that's the reason he didn’t want to return it.  Grandpa tries to explain that he wanted to give it back all along but she isn’t hearing it until another voice tells her to stop.

Arthur Hopkins walks in and greets Grandpa.  He apologizes for his granddaughter.  He begins to walk toward Yugi and tells her that Yugi won this duel.  Rebecca doesn’t believe it and runs over to Yugi and Arthur.  Arthur congratulates Yugi, saying he's a great duelist and then goes over to Yugi's deck and picks up the card he placed back on top.  He figured it was this card and shows it to Rebecca. The card is a magic card, Soul Release.   Arthur explains that if Yugi would have used this card, he could have removed 5 cards from each players graveyard. This would have taken her Shadow Ghoul to 2300. Since the Black Magician has a attack power of 2500 and she only had 200 Life Points left, she would have lost. Rebecca asks why did Yugi surrender then and Arthur explains that Yugi has a kind heart and wanted to save her, just like his grandfather did for him. In the cave-in, he lost the game on purpose to save him and let him drink the water to save his life. Both Muto's blush while Arthur is explaining this to Rebecca. The scene flashes back to Arthur looking very weak but still asks Grandpa why he surrendered and Grandpa says that winning isn’t important, life is. He then gave him the water and they were rescued soon after.

Arthur says that he did teach her to send her cards to the graveyard to power up the Shadow Ghoul but you need to show respect to the monsters you sacrifice.  Be it in Duel Monsters or Archaeology, you must have a caring heart, even in battle.  He gave Grandpa the Blue Eyes White Dragon with a thankful heart for saving his life.  Rebecca says that the card is torn now and Grandpa tries to apologize but Arthur explains that even though the card is torn, their friendship is still there.  Arthur explains to Rebecca that cards do have hearts, if she doesnt understand it, she doesnt deserve to be champion.

Rebecca turns to Yugi and is about to apologize but Yugi says its ok and gives her his Bond of Friendship card. Everyone is happy now and Arthur challenges Grandpa to another duel and he accepts, saying this time he wont surrender. Joey wants to see this match, his "sensei" vs Arthur. Tristan asks if Grandpa is feeling ok and he tries that stretch again as the scene shows a sunset and i guess he cramps up again...

As the episode closes, you see the Blue Eyes White Dragon card laying beside the Bond of Friendship card.

Episode Rating (1-10) 7.9  Aww.  How cute.  The Bond of Friendship card.  Great dueling all around.  Still no move what-so-ever in the plot.  It's not really important though.  We learned a lot about Grandpa.  Also the prophecy of the God Cards was first mentioned here.   We'll deal with those later.
