Virgilia Hazard, the daughter of William and Maud Hazard. She is a strong willed, active and extreme abolitionist who is the core of many of the family's disputes. Her later marries an escaped slave, Grady, who is then shot and killed during John Browns raid of Harpers Ferry. She is then sent to an insane assylum, and is aided by congressman Sam Greene. During the Civil War, Virgilia applies to be in the nurses corp, but is turned down, but with the influence of Greene, she is then accepted. She works in a field hospital, but is known to treat the southern soliders differently. After being accused of murdering a southerner, she attacks the manager, and is later hung for the murder.
