Take Environmental Consciousness to
Your Own Yard

by: ARA Content

(ARA) - Americans are more health conscious than ever before, and living healthy is a belief that is starting to extend from just exercising and watching what we eat to concern for our surroundings and environment.

One place that many are focusing their attention is their home and yard. We want our home to be impressive, whether it's because we're selling it or because we just want our surroundings to be comforting and soothing. There's nothing like pulling into the driveway after a long day at work and noting the lush, green grass, the birds chirping in the trees, and flowers in bloom -- it's a way to "get away" from it all.

When guests visit your home, the first thing they will notice is the color of your lawn, and who wants to make a first impression with brown, dried patchy grass? But concern that the fertilizer and weed killers we're using is hazardous not only to our own health, but those of our pets and children, is a significant one. More about this...

Chemical lawn treatments have produced excellent looking lawns, but appearances are not everything. These products may contain high levels of phosphorous that can damage the environment. For example, run-off of phosphorous promotes algae growth in lakes, according to the Journal of Production Agriculture. They also contain fast release nitrogen fertilizers that contain high concentrations of chemicals requiring the 24-72 hour waiting period before stepping onto a treated lawn. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, the chemicals we use have been linked to human illnesses, and pet and bird deaths.

To combat these side effects, organic products and treatments have been developed. Chemical lawncare services began offering organic based programs over ten years ago, and in 1988, the national lawncare service industry began using organic systems, due in part to consumer demand and environmental concern. These products contain low levels of phosphorous and have slow release nitrogen qualities. More about this...

However, Mark Miles, CEO of Greener Pastures and lawncare expert warns, "Many of these products are often not as safe or environmentally friendly as represented. They are disruptive to commercial and residential lawns for the simple facts that they carry a highly offensive odor and potentially harmful materials." Some of these traditional organic treatments are sewage based or use animal origin products. They too are prone to run-off and take a long time to settle, creating a greater chance of these products being inhaled or digested by people and pets.

Fortunately, companies have responded to the problems with chemical and organic lawn treatments by creating their own organic systems. St. Paul, Minn.-based Greener Pastures, unlike many other organic lawn care systems, does not use human or animal sewage, or animal body parts in their lawn products and lawncare. Each of their fertilizer products utilize soy, corn, and/or wheat meals. Their products are safe for pets, people and the environment, and they smell pleasant, too. More about this...

Not only does Greener Pastures service and supply lawncare treatments, but they also research and develop their own products. After 18 years of developing core products, they have now expanded their services to include organic pest control for controlling fleas, termites, mosquitoes, spiders, cockroaches and fire ants.

Innovative and unique, Greener Pastures was chosen as the lawncare specialist for many Minneapolis, Minn. suburb's city parks and building lawns, including Edina and Maplewood. "Our products do not require a 24-72 hour quarantine like chemical treatments, and they do not smell horrible like many other organic lawncare products," said Miles.

Last year, a study performed by the University of Missouri Turfgrass Research Center found Greener Pastures' Nature's Weed and Feed and Nature's Pre-Emergent Weed Control to be as effective as Scott's Goosegrass and Crabgrass Control, yet more effective in preventing root mass reduction than Scott's.

Greener Pastures does not only focus on lawncare. They also cater to those requiring services for lakes and ponds with products such as Natures Weed Control for Ponds and Clarify. When used together, they control 100 percent of the filamentous algae (floating pond scum) found in our waters. Because Clarify is a naturally occurring biological organism that consumes fertilizer run-off, sludges, fecal materials, Bio solids, and other pollutants, it does not harm any other organisms in the water -- and Natures Weed Control just increases the metabolic rate of Clarify. With easy applications and organic-based products, you can feel at ease when treating your lawn or pond to achieve the look you want without worrying about the environmental drawbacks of traditional products.
